Dear Galaxy, From Becks

dear-john.jpgDear Galaxy:

This is a very difficult letter to write.

I know that you have spent the past five months making plans for our future together. You have arranged your life around me, and to tell the truth, I’m flattered. But you have to admit, you always knew that this moment might come.

When we met, I was on the rebound. My last girlfriend, the love of my life, had stomped on my heart. I have never felt so low. And so I genuinely appreciated the attention. Plus I loved all of the presents and money you gave me, too! They made me feel special again. And they guaranteed that I could continue to afford the lifestyle to which I’d become accustomed, with, y’know, private jets and $14,000 watches and houses on multiple continents and everything.

Also, when I was just a dump-ee, guys like Tom and Katie and Jennifer and Mark didn’t want to hang out with me. And Fabio Capello wouldn’t even give me the time of day. But with you…well, everyone could see that I was wanted, which made them desire my company. You have no idea how much I appreciate your making me popular again.

But Galaxy, I think you’ve always known that you were the pursuer in this relationship. I don’t want to sound like a cad, but you’ve always loved and needed me more than I loved and needed you. And now that my last girlfriend has said she wants to patch things up… Well, I’m sorry. In the immortal words of Woody Allen, “The heart wants what it wants.” (Okay, yeah, so he was shagging his step-daughter at the time, but still. It applies.)

But know that I’ll still be available for the occasional quickie when she doesn’t need me, okay? Oh, and one more thing. This is a very delicate subject, but… Do you think you could keep the money spigot open and flowing freely? Because…well…she doesn’t have the means to fork over any cash, and…um…to be honest, I need it.

And try to understand: It’s not you. It’s me.

Love Respect Affection Sincerely,

David

Chris said, "unfortunatly though your leage would be a rather drop in class…..lets say the equivalent of 5 leagues in england (like playing non league really!)"

    I say:
Hahahahahah! Good one Chris! Like non-league really. That's awesome. You mean like Tim Howard at Everton and Bobby Convey and Marcus Hahneman at Reading? Teams that finished in the top half of the EPL?

Granted MLS is not near the top leagues in Europe, but it isn't that far either. I'd rate the league more like the Danish or Norwegian top leagues, or maybe even like the rest of the French League One.

But non-league? Hahahaha! Stick to Irish futbol. Maybe you can give us an update on Hurling and Gaelic Football.

Hey im from uk and have watched and trained with usa players who have moved over here, unfortunatly though your leage would be a rather drop in class.....lets say the equivalent of 5 leagues in england (like playing non league really!) i think becks made the right decision at the time to go but looking now and how he is playing it is far to early and would be an injustice for him to have to play his best days in this league! also with england calling and the manager looking to defy him the 100 caps (cuz lets face it, if he refuses friendlies the manager will say bye bye!) i think its best for all involved that he looks to go elsewhere! good luck with your league but we want our becks back please

I was reading somewhere that his Madrid teammates were bemoaning the fact that Beckham's move to the MLS was too early. Ruud van Nistelrooy was saying that Beckham still had a few years left to play at the highest level and wishes he could go to the MLS later.

Ouch. I don't think the MLS will appreciate that.
  • Wiz, doesn't RSL at least still have a DP spot? Doesn't spending that give them something to look forward to? So who's the more hopeless team really? Plus they'll be $6.5 million richer than we will at the end of the season when we both miss the playoffs.

Ian, you made me smile before my morning coffee. Ask my family how difficult that is to do.

I am trying to decide what's worse: the anticipation of something big about to happen-then having it snatched from you while at the bottom of the table (ie. Galaxy fan) or having no hope of...anything while at the bottom of the table (ie. RSL fan) I think I would rather have the hope.

    PS. very nicely done
  • D, This coming from THE Master of Satire? I am honored.

    This is excellent. Well done.

PS - I wonder how my balls are doing. It's been weeks since I've publicly inspected the old onion patch. Oh ... oh there they are, and they're just fine. Excellent. As you were.
