Do You Have Tickets to FC Barcelona Tonight?

By: jen | August 1st, 2009

I don’t, but you know that’s because I’m here in sunny Virginia.

But if you are going I’d love to hear from you. Post a comment before or after the game and give us a feel for the game. How was the atmosphere? How was the play? Who were the stand out players for the Galaxy? Who would you rather see in the line up? And (dare I ask?) how was the mood toward Beckham?

Beckham actually might not play due to back problems, but hopes to. His ability to play will be determined on game night.

I believe that Donovan will be in the starting line up as his calf injury has improved. He only played the second half of Wednesday’s All-Star match against Everton.

I’ll be sitting here in my crooked recliner (think Fraser’s Dad’s chair) taking it all in, but NOT in high def. (I’m really getting sick of not having FSC in HD.)

Oh, and by the way, Donovan has been voted MLS’s Player of the Month. It is Landon’s fourth time to win this award.

It is not necessary for you to wish Beckham plays.

I only caught 25 minutes in the second half, but wow. Barcelona is amazing — much better than AC Milan. But Landon certainly holds his own when he gets the ball. I hope the European scouts are watching!!!!!

Well that was fun! Congrats from the Barca side of the Offside for not getting pasted 0-6 or some such silliness. Nice to see a Beck’s bender, and Landon is the real deal.I thought he left Europe a few years back on purpose though…

Aside from Beckham’s single feat of brilliance, Landon was easily the best player for the Galaxy. Landon’s ability to smoke the back line of Barca was obvious on more than one occasion. In one particular vignette, Landon torched Rafa Marquez and headed into the penalty area only to shoot a rather obvious attack directly at the keeper. One can only hope he has that kind of attacking speed at Azteca in a few weeks.

Barca is Barca — world class. AJ DelaGarza (e.g., the Little Engine that could) once again did a great job defending against their main threat, Messi. (In previous weeks, AJ has been assigned to go man on with Ronaldinho and others.)

The crowd of real Galaxy fans were hard (as promised) on Becks for most of the first half. This subsided (as promised) in the second half. Most hardcore supporter groups (e.g., The Riot Squad) want to support to the team and will cease to jeer Becks when the Galaxy resume league play. Tonight’s friendly was one last opportunity to let Becks know we don’t approve of how he handled his loan to Milan. Disagreement over.

All in all, what a summer for soccer!

Good quotes from the Barca coach after the game – gave respect to the Galaxy and MLS and he said Donovan was very, very fast and caused their defense problems. He also said Landon could definitely, absolutely play in Europe.

Much as I love to see him on the Galaxy, I would also love to see him play in La Liga. somebody, make it happen!

I’m almost teary-eyed when I think about Landon’s play. Good God he was good! VERY good! And he really could do very well in La Liga. I hope, hope, hope someone was watching. Barcelona obviously doesn’t need him (although could you see him and Messi playing in tandem? Whoa!), but he would be such a great fit for the Spanish game — please, please let someone fork over the big bucks and take him away!

And Laurie you are spot on — I could not BELIEVE the level of play from Barca. I think I started to annoy my husband as I kept saying, “Wow . . . oh, wow . . . Look at their pass– . . . — Wow!”
