Donovan Challenge Breaks Cole’s Ankle

Let the conspiracy theories begin. You know them by now: Landon is only in England to scope out the opposition for the upcoming World Cup; Landon is secretly pleased that Ashley Cole’s ankle is broken, thereby aiding the U.S.’s efforts to defeat England in the WC first round.

Now, I know that none of you believe this drivel. You’re much too smart for that.

The truth is, it was a 50/50 ball, off the ground, that just had an unfortunate result. Read Everton’s forum thread discussion of the incident. The first post pretty much sums up my opinion.

On to the match itself. I haven’t seen Landon play a match like that since the Confederations Cup defeat of Brazil. No, he didn’t play the game of his life like he did in that match, but he played the way we always knew he could, with a world class team, and defeating Chelsea for goodness’ sake. I’ll be back with more thoughts on Landon’s play later when my parenting duties slow down a bit.

Did you see the match? What did you think? Was the challenge on Cole just an unfortunate 50/50 ball as I described?

As much as I would love to see Donovan stay with Everton, I can't see how it would happen. I can't see MLS accepting less than a record transfer fee for him. That pegs the minimum at $10 million. I don't think Everton has that to offer. Even if they did, I'm not sure Donovan would be their target.

I think he comes back here in March. If he has a good World Cup showing, then maybe one of the bigger teams comes calling with more serious cash.
  • In a 50-50 challenge, better Ashley's ankle than Landon's. Is all I have to say.

Love this opening line from MLS Talk: "To call Landon Donovan’s loan to Everton a success is to call the Grand Canyon a decent-sized hole."

Eric Altshule makes an argument for how Donovan will be sold to Everton.
