Four Galaxy Players in the Waiver Draft
By: Laurie | November 29th, 2007Almost missed this one. The Waiver Draft is today at noon (Pacific), and we have four players heading out the door:
Mike Caso
Lance Friesz
Carlos Pavon
Kyle Veris
I’m not too surprised by any of these, but I thought they might try to make a trade for either Pavon or Veris rather than simply waive them. (And my maternal area is hoping for soft landings for all of them.)
Here’s the full list. (Borrowed from my brother-in-blog Dave over at Red Bulls Offside, who got it from MLSnet.) Anybody see any bargains?
To be honest, I haven’t heard of most of the players. Ramon Nunez interests me from Chivas, but he hasn’t been in form lately and I’m not sure a desperate team like the Galaxy will help that process along. And I’d never say no to taking back our French former trialist, Laurent Merlin, although I’m not sure he has what the team needs either.
Do you see anybody on the list you think we should snag?
(And is anybody else glad we have CoJones making these decisions? Can you picture the screwups that might occur otherwise?)
CHIVAS: David Arvizu, Desmond Brooks, Carlos Llamosa, Rodrigo Lopez, Laurent Merlin, Justin Myers, Ramon Nunez, Orlando Perez, Eder Robles, Erasmo Solorzano
COLORADO: Zach Thornton
COLUMBUS: Ben Hunter
DALLAS: Juan Botero
D.C. UNITED: Shawn Crowe, Mira Mupier, Brad North, Kiki Willis,
HOUSTON: Kenneth Hoerner, Jordan James
KANSAS CITY: Edson Edcock, Aaron John Godbolt, Willy Guadarrama, Chris Konopka
LOS ANGELES: Mike Caso, Lance Friesz, Carlos Pavon, Kyle Veris
NEW YORK: Blake Camp
NEW ENGLAND: Bryan Byrne, Miguel Gonzalez, Marshall Leonard, Chris Loftus
REAL SALT LAKE: Chris Brown, Steven Curfman, Christian Jimenez, Jean-Martial Kipre, Jack Stewart
TORONTO FC: Adam Braz, Maycoll Canizalez, Srdjan Djekanovic, David Guzman, Stephen Lumley, Cristian Nunez, Marco Reda

Hey Laurie i’ve got a question. The Turkish media claims that Ruud Gullit has called Hakan Sukur on the phone and has asked him to come over to LA next year. Do you have any info on this?

I had heard the rumor also, but I can’t remember where I heard it. (Maybe from you? Have you written about it somewhere?) I’ll keep an eye out and let you know if I hear anything.

He’s (Hakan Sukur) getting up there in age, 35-36 years old, right? although if he is healthy, I’m sure he would get more chances than Pavon, Buddle or Gordon…

I know everyone wants young great players but, with the salary cap, MLS teams can’t buy them or keep them, so they might do fine for now with older players that are great as well as committed. They can make a big impact on younger teammates while they’re here and that raises the game. Beckham aside, look at what Blanco has done in Chicago as a mentor. I can’t think of another way to bring more skill to the league while we wait for its payroll to grow big enough to acquire and keep younger stars.

Yea Hakan has already stated before that he would love to come to America to play for a couple more seasons. Hes 36 now but I think he can still play in MLS for another 3 years. Hes tall and a master of heading the ball into the net. Hes also a great captain, keeeping morale up in the lockeroom, acting as a big brother…
