Galaxy 1 – 1 Chivas (and Tell Me If I’m Guessing Right About the Game)

By: Laurie | May 20th, 2007

Another draw. Better than a loss, I suppose. And if you’re going to get a draw, it’s always better to do it when the other team scores first, so you feel like you’ve come back rather than squandered a lead. And this game worried me for some reason, so a draw doesn’t feel bad.

Other than that…

I wasn’t able to watch the game, so I was very grateful to Luis Bueno for getting his MLSnet recap up quickly.

And I realized today that these non-televised matches are a good test for how far I’ve come in learning about the Galaxy. As a new-this-year Galaxy fan who processes everything visually, you have no idea how much it bugs me not to be able to SEE where and how the players are playing. But as a new-this-year Galaxy fan, I’m getting close to the point of being able to figure some of these things out. So here are my thoughts on the starting lineup. If you were at the game, tell me if I’m right.

The game guide listed this as the probable lineup:

———————————-Robbie Findley———————————-
———Kyle Martino —- Pete Vagenas —- Landon Donovan—————
——————–Nate Sturgis — Kevin Harmse ——————-
—-Ante Jazic –Tyrone Marshall — Ty Harden — Chris Albright —-
————————————-Joe Cannon————————————

but in the actual game, Findley and Sturgis didn’t start. Instead it was Cobi Jones and Nate Jaqua. Now, based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m guessing Jaqua started up front for Findley. Right? And then I’m thinking that Donovan moved to the center, with Cobi starting on the right and Vagenas moving back into Nate Sturgis’s spot. So this is what I’m seeing in my head:

———————————-Nate Jaqua———————————-
———Kyle Martino —- Landon Donovan —-Cobi Jones —————
——————–Pete Vagenas — Kevin Harmse ——————-
—-Ante Jazic –Tyrone Marshall — Ty Harden — Chris Albright —-
————————————-Joe Cannon————————————

How’d I do? Do I pass? Or am I at least close?

My big question mark was what happened after Chris Albright dinged his hamstring and Nate Sturgis came in. Did Sturgis play at right back? From the game recap it sounds as if he did. If so, how’d he do?

Still learning, folks, but I’m getting there. But your help is still appreciated.

Scoring Summary:
CHV — Maykel Galindo 4 (Ante Razov 1, Sacha Kljestan 3) 35LA — Landon Donovan 2 (unassisted) 50

Los Angeles Galaxy — Joe Cannon, Chris Albright (Nathan Sturgis 15), Ty Harden, Tyrone Marshall, Ante Jazic, Cobi Jones (Robbie Findley 63), Kevin Harmse, Peter Vagenas, Kyle Martino, Landon Donovan, Nate Jaqua (Santino Quaranta 81),

Substitutes Not Used: Steve Cronin, Mike Randolph, Ian Russell, Kyle Veris

A tie is only good enough if you are happy being ahead of RSL.

Your second lineup is correct, although on the broadcast they billed it as a 4-4-2 so Donovan would have been up top with Jaqua, but Donovan likes to play underneath the top forward so I'm sure it ended up like you have it.

Sturgis did play as right back and did a fine job as far as I could tell.
  • Ouuuufff Cobi had begun the game !!

  • Yeah, I was kind of surprised that Findley didn't start. I really wouldn't be surprised to see Jaqua out the door.

I did find it interesting that Carlos Ruiz played for Dallas yesterday after what, two games of not starting? I'm really wondering if these rumors have some credence.
  • Jaqua is aweful, I'll say it again, keep Findley in the starting line-up.

Laurie, this game was televised nationally on Telefutura. That is how I ended up watching it. Boring game for the most part, we really need to improve our game. Get rid of Jaqua!
