Galaxy Guaranteed Contract Day Moves
By: NathanHJ | July 1st, 2009
As has been widely reported in the futbol blogosphere, the Galaxy made a trade today with Chivas USA, sending a conditional 2010 draft pick and allocation money down the hall in return for striker Alecko Eskandarian. To make space on the roster, the team cut holding midfielder Josh Tudela on the day his 2009 contract was to be guaranteed.
Eskandarian has been hobbled by injury for the past few years, and has yet to match the tantalizing promise of his 2004 season when he scored 10 goals for DC United and was the MLS Cup MVP. He was slowed by injury again this season with Chivas USA. He joined Chivas in January 2008 and has only appeared in 18 games, scoring six times in the process. This year he’s only started twice and seen the field in seven games.
Josh Tudela has been with the Galaxy since 2007 when he was drafted out of Indiana (Dema Kovalenko’s alma mater) and only recently moved off of the developmental roster. He was one of the survivors of the horrific 2007 campaign that saw a few games late in the season when only 14 players could dress because of numerous injuries. He held steady in the middle during the team’s improbable late season winning streak that almost saw them sneak into the playoffs. I thought he was improving this season, though I was never ready to label him ready to start regularly. I hope that some team picks him off the waiver wire – some place that needs a developing holding midfielder. The kid has heart, that’s for sure.
As for Eskandarian, I’ll take him over Jovan Kirovski in a minute, even if he can’t stay healthy, even if he’s been having trouble being dangerous since he was shipped out of DC. If nothing else he’ll bring personality. I will forever remember him scoring against New York after the rebranding as Red Bull, grabbing a can of the stuff from the sideline, swigging it, and spitting it back on the field. More of that please.
But this isn’t the last roster change in the offing. With David Beckham (and you saw this note about our sneak peek at the new book about the Beckham Experiment, right?) the current roster lists 25 players. The roster limit is 24 and it still seems like Chris Birchall is coming on July 15th. That leaves two more players to get the ax. I’ve been chatting with some folks over email about possibles. Names mentioned include: Yohance Marshall, Tristan Bowen, Julian Valentin, Leonard Griffin, and Kyle Patterson. I think that the rules say you can’t cut someone who is on the Disabled List, so Marshall is safe until he comes off. Valentin is recovering from a broken foot, so he’s on the DL. Tristan Bowen is Generation Addidas and thus doesn’t count against the salary cap, so there’s value in keeping him.
So, what do you guys think? Was getting Eskandarian the right move? What about Tudela? Will you miss him? And, finally, who are your candidates for the cuts needed for Becks and Birchall to be on the roster? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

My money is on Valentin & Griffin getting their walking papers. Arena seems to like Patterson and Bowen is too young and has too much potential to be moved.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we traded one of these guys for some $$$ or a draft pick, either.
Or we could trade Becks to FC Dallas or NYRB and just sit back and laugh.

Full explanation of the rules here: http://web.mlsnet.com/about/league.jsp?section=regulations&content=overview. Can’t waive an injured player unless you negotiate a settlement. Seems like we identified 5 likely candidates and only 2 of them can be waived. I guess you have your magic two: Patterson and Griffin. Unless a trade can be negotiated as Colin suggested (but I suspect trading partners would know they can wait it out and pick them up on waiver so we probably can’t get much).

Tudela plays with heart. But I have never felt that he plays all that well. He has good moments, but he lacks skill. I think we all keep waiting for him to get better but I don’t think he’s ever going to make it. I may be alone in this, but I am glad to see him go.

Thanks, David. I forgot Valentin was injured. Didn’t he break his foot again playing in the USL for Cleveland? Poor guy. If Franklin wasn’t gone for the season I could easily see Sanneh getting the boot instead of Patterson, but I guess that’s the way things go…
In regards to Tudela, I think he’ll make it back in the MLS or USL-1. I see him as an Ely Allen type, a guy who we all want to root for but who can never get it together on the field. Essentially a microcosm of the LA Galaxy.

There is one other possibility we haven’t discussed: Kirovski. With Eskandarian, do we really need Kirovski? And his salary is higher than the others, isn’t it? It somehow seems unlikely, but he is another candidate for the boot, isn’t he?

We thought Eskandarian was off to a great start at the game on July 4. He scored withing 8 minutes, was continually hustling, and yet was subbed in the 2nd half. Was he subbed as a precaution against reinjury? The chemistry was all gone when he was pulled. Jordan seems too often eratic. Any thoughts? We also missed Kovalendo.

Nathan:
I heard some rumors from someone in the KC FO that Arena has been looking into a couple of the young players that Onalfo has relegated to the bench (doghouse) (i.e. Harrington, and a few other) to help the Galaxy midfield/defense. You got any scoop on that. They way our season is going it wouldn’t surprise me. Shoot me an e-mail if you get a chance.

I am pleased to see Aleko join the Galaxy, we needed someone badly. Even an injury prone veteran such as Aleko my help fill the goal drought with a spark of energy. When he is healthy he has shown an apptitude for scoring. Which brings me to one of my pet peeves, not to critisize him for earning a living but aren’t fowards suppose to score goals? How does Jovan call himself a striker?

Kirovski and Miserablanzi NEED to go. Seriously. These two offer very little on their own and when paired together on the pitch, they are in continual back-pedal mode. They can’t pass or hold the ball. They both cringe and crumble when an opposing a player comes at them with the ball. Yeah Kirovski scored against San Jose, but that is not enough compared to the times he has give the ball away. Please tell me if I have missed something in watching them play this first half of the season, but I see nothing redeeming in their appearances. Nothing. Get rid of them and look forward!
