Galaxy Odds and Ends

By: Laurie | February 6th, 2008

Just a few things that don’t warrant a post of their own:

– Don’t forget to watch Landon Donovan taking on Mexico tonight. 6:00 Pacific on ESPN2. And if it makes a difference to you, Eric Wynalda won’t be announcing.

– I know you’ve heard the sad story, but Fabio Capello decided David Beckham wasn’t fit enough for the Switzerland game and didn’t call him up for that 100th cap. And in even worse news, I think I read that one of the goals in England’s 2-1 victory came from Sean Wright-Phillips, who I believe plays in Beckham’s right midfield spot. Will Beckham ever become a centurion? (And can I use the word “centurion” in this way?) Stay tuned and we’ll let you know.

– I read somewhere that defender Celestine Babayaro is definitely going to join the Galaxy but is waiting on visa and work permit issues. And his injury issues are all behind him. I’m sure of it.

– And remember the rumors about Polish striker Majiec Zurawski joining the Galaxy? Those turned out to be false, but he almost joined the Columbus Crew as a DP before deciding at the last minute to go to AEL Larissa in Greece instead.

– According to the official Galaxy website, these players are trying out with the team.

Two of them are Portland Timbers, but this Seattle Sounders fan is choosing not to hold that against them. Except I’m vaguely remembering goalkeeper Josh Wicks really pissing me off in the past. But that was then, right? This is now, and we need a goalkeeper.

Oh, and also? What’s a keeper from the Danish league doing on the list? I thought we only exported. But I guess he’s a US native and therefore a re-import, so it’s okay.

Gabriel Aikhena - Midfielder
Last Club: Gombak United (Singapore League)

Fed Bianchi - Midfielder
Last Club: California Victory

Prince Daye - Midfielder
Last Club: CD Badajoz (La Liga)

Richard Duru - Midfielder
Last Club: N/A

Bryan Jordan - Forward
Last Club: Portland Timbers

Jordan King - Goalkeeper
College: UC – Riverside

Chris Sharpe - Goalkeeper
Last Club: Viborg FF (Danish League)

Josh Wicks - Goalkeeper
Last Club: Portland Timbers

And that’s all the news I have for the moment.

S….W…P….! Woohooo! That was a sweet goal by my boy Shaunie!

Sorry, Becks. Better luck next time. If it’s any consolation, Capello (who is an arse as a human being but will whip the lads into shape to be sure) has said that it’ll be tough going for Frankie and JT as well.

I just saw where Josh Wicks is signed as of yesterday with his old team the Portland Timbers for a one year contract….nothing on Galaxy site yet. That leaves Alamo (remember him?) and the Aussie…to back up Cronin. Hearing the Aussie might not be headed for a Hawaiian trip anytime soon….
