Galaxy Odds and Ends

By: Laurie | January 26th, 2008

First, about that Beckham photo yesterday. I tried to add text, but Wordpress kept refusing to post readable text and the photo. The photo was more important. The story, though? Becks was in Sierra Leone for Unicef. (Is he done with Arsenal now? I kind of lost track. Out of sight, out of mind.)

And in other Galaxy news, remember the other day when I told you former Galaxy guy Joseph Ngwenya was going to Austria? Well now former Galaxy guy Nate Jaqua is apparently headed there too. Or at least that’s the rumor reported on an Austrian website. Different teams — Nate is reportedly heading to SC Rheindorf Altach — but same country. What’s up with that? Why Austria?

(And how much do you want to bet they meet over drinks to gossip about Landon Donovan?)

Oh, and in more Beckham news, Alexi says David is absolutely, positively not going to Newcastle. He’s not for sale. The end, EPL. Get over yourselves.

Jaqua was my #1 pick to be an Earthquake. Sigh. Good for him though. He needs to be capped already.

Includes a rare Beckham reference to giving some away ($, calm down) not how much but since the question pretty much stays up… http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article3257241.ece

Josh, that’s the question, isn’t it? We never really found out what kind of player Jaqua was. He was a target forward who was never targeted. Nobody got the ball to him. Although on the rare occasions when it happened in LA, he tended to miss.

He did seem to get better in Houston, though, and scored six goals. Who knows what he could have done with Beckham?

Josh, I do think players choke. Soccer/football players in the U.S. have never had the kind of pressure that TV contracts and media scrutiny bring, to say nothing of the crowds. More than that, though, is that they’ve never had the pressure of hundreds of thousands of people living and dieing every Monday based on how they did over the weekend — as other professional players do here and footballers do around the rest of the world.

That’s a lot to step up to, and I think Galaxy/MLS did about every single thing that I can think of wrong to prepare them for it, TWITS. But I won’t dwell in the past. I’m hanging my hopes on the new coaches to sort that out as well (with the freedom to do so that Frank never had…oops back to the past again).
