Galaxy Salaries for 2006 (Or: $$$, Part I)

By: Laurie | February 26th, 2007

I’m in the process of researching Galaxy salaries and how they’ll be affected by Beckham’s arrival (and how much this will affect the decision as to whether Landon Donovan stays or goes next year. Not that anybody’s actually talking about that. Yet.)

So here’s step 1: Take a look at salaries before Beckham’s arrival. €xactly how much did our guys make last year? Well, it depends. Landon Donovan was the highest-paid player in the league and made enough to buy that spiffy new house. But some of our guys… Well, I’ll let you see for yourself.

These are the salaries from last year, 2006, when I believe the team salary cap was $1.9 million. They’re taken from WashingtonPost.com. The first figure is “base salary,” and the second is “guaranteed salary,” which includes, “base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the term of his contract, including option years.”

I’m still in the process of figuring out how the salary cap meshes with these two figures. There must be some quirks that I don’t know about, because when I couldn’t figure out how to load this list into Excel, I actually sat here and added the totals up on the computer’s calculator and I got over $2.5 million for base salary and over $2.7 million for guaranteed salary. Can anybody out there explain this to me?

Your input (with sources) is appreciated.

Laurie, you poor thing! It must be more work for you than I imagined, being team mom, as I presume several of your kids will be living at home where they can afford both a roof and food. Are they eligible for unemployment insurance off season, btw? Hopefully, there is no salary cap for the “team-building” shrink :).
I do NOT approve of this distribution of wealth…RATS I almost never do and, once AGAIN, no one ever consults me before making the arrangements!
