Galaxy to Play in Minnesota in October
By: Laurie | May 22nd, 2007The Galaxy continue to cement their reputation as the whores of the league with yet another exhibition match planned for this year, this one on October 10 in Minnesota.
Oh! Wait! Did I say “whores”? I meant ambassadors! Yes! AMBASSADORS!! THAT’s what I meant!! Sweet, selfless ambassadors, spreading MLS cheer and goodwill throughout the universe in a move that has NOTHING to do with money, or publicity, or showing off (and sucking money out of) the league’s coolest and most expensive toy player, David Beckham.
(Whores, ambassadors. Whatever. There’s such a fine line between the two.)
Barring unforeseen events, Beckham, who has battled injuries this season, is contractually guaranteed to play. Minneapolis is the only non-MLS city in the United States in which Beckham is scheduled to play.
The Thunder, a St. Paul-based team playing the United Soccer League’s First Division, will officially announce the match at a news conference this morning. The Galaxy will play an undetermined international opponent in “Copa Minnesota,” the first of what the Thunder hopes will be an annual event.
This would bother me a lot less if we weren’t already playing five other games in October (including another exhibition match), following EIGHT games in September. It’s a schedule that’s already been twisted and manipulated so that every stadium in the league can get a piece of those Beckham revenues. But why stop with league teams?
I mean, we all know that playing a thirty-two-year-old player in game after game after game is JUST the way to guarantee that he’s in top form for the playoffs, right?

Do the non-toy players get more money from all of these extra shenanigans, or if the season is extended? Or is their annual contract just you do whatever we want whenever we want for whatever we pay you?

That’s an excellent question, Diane. Does anybody know the answer?

I’ll clearly be unavailable tomorrow, but I’m really interested in this. There are too many questionable judgment calls piling up…and the moms are NOT happy!
