Galaxy v. Oita Trinita — Live Blog

By: jen | February 18th, 2009

45 minutes until kick-off: The stadium is so empty I should have told out commenters Justin and Lee to give a shout out and wave to us in TVland. I’m sure it will fill a bit before the Galaxy take the stage. (Hey look! It’s Neetan the Turtle and our t-shirt shootin’ Cosmo!)

Mark Rogondino interview with Arena: “Landon’s definitely going to be back.”

Starting lineup: (um, where is Ricketts?)

—————-Wicks—————–
Franklin——Sanneh—Gonzalez——-Lewis
Klein ——Kovalenko—-Tudela——-Kirovski
——–Buddle———-Gordon———-

1st minute: lots of air balls
1:10 Now we have better possession
1:45 Oika long shot goes wide
3′ Oika hand ball
4′ Was that Alan Gordon sprinting back on defense?
5′ Kovalenko cross to Buddle, top of 6 yard box, Buddle can’t get to it
6′ Galaxy free kick from corner — Lewis outswinger goes long across the box
8′ Galaxy showing nice possession
10′ Klein shot trapped and turned by Gordon who is offsides, goal is called back
12′ Oita not putting much pressure on us defensively
14′ Oika moving the ball around, Galaxy pressuring well
(sorry, Firefox froze on me)
24′ Great combination play by the Galaxy in and around the box
25′ Klein takes the corner, no scoring chance
28′ Awkward clearance from Sanneh
(earlier I heard Wicks yelling, “Away! Away!” like he did last season. I have to admit that it drives me nuts!)
31′ Oika giving us all the time in the world to create offense in their half
(FSC reporting a hamstring injury to Ricketts so he is resting tonight)
35′ Lewis sends decent long ball to Gordon, cleared by defense
37′ Buddle holds the ball on the flank — dribbles in to no help, dispossessed.
38′ Tudela fouled, free kick
38′ Oika shot on goal, slow and low, scooped up by Wicks
(lots of slipping on the surface)
40′ Kovalenko fouls Takamatsu, pushing and shoving ensues, broken up by — Klein, of course
41′ Kovalenko fouled at the corner of the 18 yard box, free kick from Klein into wall
44′ GOAL!!! Buddle capitalizes on defensive mistake, one v one shoots and scores near post!
45′+ Galaxy play possession to end the half

HALFTIME (time for BowFlex commercials)

46′ (whoops) Kyle Patterson replacing Buddle — Kirovski moves up to Buddle’s spot
49′ Nice bending ball into the box from Klein — cleared, but NICE ball
(Tudela is playing very well — he is all over the pitch, reading the game well)
51′ Corner kick cleared out for another corner
52′ Oika player booked with a yellow in the box — blatant hand ball — penalty kick called . . .
53′ Kirovski buries the penalty kick down the middle. GOAL!!!!!!!
55′ Galaxy pressuring in their offensive third
55′ Kovalenko long shot with the left over the crossbar
57′ Another corner chance . . . taken by Klein . . . bent to back corner of the six, Patterson gets a bit of a head on it, over the touchline.
58′ Tudela whistled for foul 20 yards out, directly in front of the goal
59′ Shot gets past the wall, just over the crossbar
Justin, pipe down there! :) (Obviously extra beer available for the last minute half time beer sales)
62′ Oita passing in their defensive third — and oh! we take it away again
(I haven’t seen a lot of creativity from the central midfield this game so far — that’s concerning)
65′ Wicks saves long shot
67′ Magee in for Gordon, has a shot on goal — goes wide
(There is a tax service in town called Liberty — they have someone outside dressed as the Statue of Liberty, waving at traffic to drum up business. The Oita keeper looks just like her!)
70′ Oita doing better to build up offense
70′ Shot from 25 yards goes wide, stretches Wicks out full
72′ Gonzalez won’t allow Oita player to turn in the box — Wicks scoops up the ball
74′ Much more pressure from Oita now, Lewis heads out a cross
74′ Bryan Jordan in for Chris Klein
77′ Nice movement and passing along the left side, beautiful ball from Lewis eventually cleared
78′ Free kick from 30 yards — Lewis bends it over the wall but over the crossbar
79′ Miglioranzi in for Tudela
80′ Oita in our defensive third, take their first corner of the match, better possession
82′ Oita sliding shot near goal — great defense from Gonzalez
84′ Kirovski offsides — he’s been quiet since he moved up to forward
85′ Kovalenko fouled
87′ DeLaGarza in for Framklin
87′ Awkward strike by Patterson, goes left
90′ Kirovski gets a hand in the eye, Oita player yellow card
90′+ Free kick into the wall, deflected out for a corner
90′+ Short corner to take up the rest of the time

FINAL WHISTLE

Galaxy 2, Oita Trinita 0

So I turn on the game in tbhe 39th. The Galaxy score in the 43rd. Coincidence? I think not.

Also, the passing game is painful to watch. And yet the Galaxy have the lead. I could accept that.

It is painful. Oika’s game is just awful though. Like, I’m-going-to-fall-asleep awful.

If Tony Sanneh makes the team, he’ll be our version of Chivas’ Claudio Suarez. He has a ton of experience and I’ve always liked Tony.

I think he kinda-sorta HAS to make the team at this point. Our defensive positions are still touch and go. And I agree, I like the guy a lot.

I’m liking Sanneh too. He’ll be a good addition.

At the moment I’m not seeing anybody to replace Donovan or Beckham, though. It’s as if the whole team is in stasis, just waiting. This Beckham thing needs to be resolved so the team can move on and bring in somebody equally talented, but without the “brand.”

Riquelme for playmaker. I can dream…can’t I? Of course, Riquelme is a bit of a head case (so I’ve heard).

Oh Frank, I hear ya on replacing Cienfuegos. It’s been years, but will we ever have such a creative, yet holding midfielder again?

For what its worth, here’s my ratings of the starting XI:

Wicks: 6,9 – not too busy, and did what he had to when asked with little fuss. Also yelled at the midfield, which was needed.

Franklin: 6.2 – my favourite player last season, but seemed to disappear tonight, he’s recovering, so I don’t take his appearance of an indication of anything.

    Omar – 6.8 – solid..some really great deciions

    Sanneh – 7.0 – I’m impressed..let’s hope he can stay healhy

Eddie Lewis – 6.5 – He didn’t play LB for us last year, so tis was new. He kept on drifting really far forward and his free kicks (with the exception of the first one) were not great. He was in a wing back position, but I think this can work only if he can balance it out with Franklin.

Klein – 6.1 – not great, but he’s the soul of the team, and I have no worries about him. Glad he’s back in midfield.

Dema – 7.2 – Hard working..I wish he’d stop confusing Tudela and hang back a bit, but he was the leader out there. Really promising, and an element we’ve been missing.

Tudela – 7.1 — real flair and and 80% pass completion by my calculations, He’s like Vagenas with accuracy. His forward balls were good too. I just wish he could show that he can make a tackle. I’ve always liked Josh, so my rating may be skewed.

Jovan. 6.9 – worked great as left winger, kind of disappeared as striker. Good addition.

Gordon – 6.7 I’ve never been a fan (I’m the guy in section 132 yelling at him all the time, I’ll be in 133 this year doing the same), but he’s the BEST guy on the team with his back to the net, and he showed a bit of this tonight. he’s also big..not bad for Gordo.

Buddle – 7.0 – thinner and hungrier. I like him tonight..and..man…the goal was great from his steal of the ball and the clinical finishing..good show from EB.

Like the possession football!! I know its a j-league team in pre-season, but I enjoyed this one more than any of the traveling road shows last year.

Please…no more Beckham..enough already. More Dema and Tudela and good MLS football!!

Well I do not share the same love for Tudela as Steve does, I think he should be cut! I love his heart but he is not a smart player at all! He continually makes stupid fouls every game, red card in the Oceananic(SP) game and a yellow card last night on a horrible tackle (although he did have one great play leading the counter) We already have a hard nose tackler in Dema, I loved watching him play last night! That dude is one tough SOB (leaning towards getting his jersey this year lol).

Something was really wrong with the grass last night players were falling all over the place. Second half seemed to be better though.

Now to take back the things I said about Sanneh (for now). He played really really good last night. Him and Gonzalez were great back there, and the back line held form all game pretty well. It was nice to watch them.

Everyone seemed to get better as the game went on. I kind of liked having Lewis back there at LB and think he should stay there if we do not sign that Honduran guy (Chaves?). He did push up a lot but seemed to have no problems getting back in position. Although the game did not have a lot of people that showed up, (wed night at 8pm what do they expect) I mean only like a third of Lars was there and hardly any of the ACB/Galaxians. It was fun though and nice to see a lot of the new faces. Although I was really confused as too where all the other guys were, when I got home I read that Arena said he knows what those guys bring to the table and wanted to see the new guys in action. With that said I like the new guys and could see Ely out and Patterson in. Patterson is fast, and has a nice touch on the ball. I did not see him trip on the ball once and Ely trips like 3 times a game.

Next game, I have a feeling we will see some more faces out there, and with only being able to keep 24 guys its going to be a tough one to guess who Bruce likes.

I think we need to say Oita didn’t bring too much game.
Still, I thought the defense was pretty solid. They
kept their shape and there were none of the gaping holes
that plagued us all too often last year. I liked Franklin and Lewis as outside backs. Pretty much everything that came down the wing got shut off with little penetration.

I also liked the play of Kovalenko. The man is a pit
bull in the middle and we need that.

Buddle was good but if there’s not another credible
option up top defenses will be able to focus on him
    and he’ll get shut down.

I’m half way between Justin and Steve on Tudela. I
love his work rate but I don’t think he’s ready for
    prime time yet.

Suwon will be a much, much tougher test on Saturday.
De Oliveria (#8) and I think it was Dae Keon Kim (#14)
looked really good for them up top last night and
their passing all across the field was crisp and
    accurate.

I agree with Justin that the field was terrible. I was at the game (Sect. 136) and I couldn’t help but notice how many players were slipping and sliding out there. Buddle slipped during warm-ups!

Overall, I thought it was going to be exactly what it was – a preseason game. Nothing to spectacular, although I did assume a FEW more people would have come out, considering there are substantial Japanese, Chinese, and Korean communinities in LA.

Oh, and one last thought – my wife was DISGUSTED by some of the LA fans (section 138) at the game who were yelling racial slurs towards the Oita players. I was surprised at this, having attended quite a few games over the years and never once hearing anything of the sort. Hopefully we haven’t encouraged THOSE types of fans to come to the games…

The pitch was really slick. We’ve had a lot of rain here the last week or so and the field couldn’t drain fast enough to keep up with the amount of water coming down. The groundskeeper showed me a picture from Monday with the whole field under 3″ of water. Soon as the rain quit it drained quickly, but not really enough time to dry properly.
