Guess Who We Have News On? Kyle Martino, That’s Who!
By: Laurie | August 11th, 2008
Despite the fact that Kyle Martino is not a Galaxy guy this year, I still have him on my google alerts — emails notices you get whenever somebody’s name appears somewhere on the web.
For most of the season, my news has been about people unrelated to Kyle — a whole lot of graduation announcements for one person named “Kyle Something” and another named “Something Martino.”
Now, though? Well, you who have Olympics coverage through cable companies which do not suck (aka those of you who don’t have effing Comcast) may know this already, but our Kyle has been doing some Olympic games commentary. Kyle has been providing commentary on MLS games.
From the quality FC Dallas blog 3rd Degree:
While Marcelo Balboa is “pulling the strings” at the Olimpics for NBC’s coverage of the soccer matches, HDNet gave the color commentary microphone to the recently retired Kyle Martino for their broadcast of the match between the Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution.
Kyle proved to be an excellent commentator. He was calm, collected, concise, eloquent and did not try to force it at any point of the broadcast. He managed to stay away from any cliches that any of the current MLS announcers use, although likely he will develop his own over time. His knowledge of the league and the players was a breath of fresh air. And he wasn’t afraid to voice a hot sports opinion. A very impressive performance.
I always thought Kyle got so screwed by the Galaxy. He was good enough to be on the team, but his salary was too high for them to play Kyle and three DPs. So out the door he went. Kelly Gray got picked up by the Rapids and then the Earthquakes, but I think teams were skittish about Kyle’s past injury issues. Which, in my opinion, sucks. (I know there are a lot of non-Martino fans here, but I always liked the guy. In fact, when you google his name, this post comes up #3, right underneath his Wikipedia page and his Galaxy player bio.)
Best of luck, Kyle!
(Oh, by the way, another blast from the past in these Olympics. Guess who’s representing Honduras as an over-age player? Former Galaxy guy Carlos Pavon.)

Thanks for this Laurie,
I was never Martino’s biggest fan as a left winger (he should have been center), but in hindsight, he was not so bad, better than a lot of guys on the team now. I always felt bad about how he got dumped and hoped things would work out, even hoped the Galaxy would take him back. This makes me feel good. looking forward to hearing him.Posted from

Lalas and Ruud are out! I’ll miss Ruud. Is Cobi or Trevor going to take over?

Still not sure if Ruud wasn’t the right guy but there seems to have been an issue with his style with the players. As for Lalas it is about time they made a move on him.

Wow. Do we call the season over, or can Cobi save what is left.
I think Cronin should have joined them.Posted from

All I can say about Lalas and Gullit leaving is A-Men! If only Cronin could have left too, Bob. If only…

Laurie,
you slightly missunderstood my commentary on 3rdDegree. Balboa is doing the Olympic games. Kyle did the MLS game on HDNet.
And wow! another crazy day in LA!

Martino was the reason I could not watch the Galaxy last season. Talk about a flopper. Thanks for going into commentating….I couldn’t believe this guy was a pro soccer player.

As one of Kyle Martino’s former coaches, I need to shime in. He was and is an excellent player, a nice guy and the galaxy is worse without him. Keeping him off the field because of salary is terrible.

OK I will leave a reply. Kyle played for my CT. ODP team before moving on to the National team, Virginia and Columbus. He was always coachable, a good teamate, loosing quality players like Martino and bringing in kids and paying them $24,000 is criminal. No wonder it is hard to watch the MLS.
