This is a group simply thrown together with no purpose - and they're playing like it. There's a few trying desparately to pick up the slack - Donovan, Klein, Jones; and Donovan has provided perfectly weighted throughballs for 3 years since he's been here - but these guys have got no one to play with. So yeah, I too am a little sick of the "publicity" route that Becks is reduced to. I just feel for the team - they're the scapegoats in all this. The endorsement thing is a bit of selling your soul to the devil, especially at that level you have to show your face a lot. But I can't figure out which appearances are work/required/reciprocal/obligations/favors/charities and which are just tacky. (Then there's the side that just seems starstruck...maybe embarrassing, but at least comprehendable ;-) ? ). It is confusing. I really, really love David Beckham the soccer player. Love his attitude, personality, skills, style -- all of it. And I don't mind his endorsement deals either. But I'm not crazy about him doing the celebrity thing. Makes me question which public figure is really him -- the athlete, or the opportunist? Both? Maybe. You know Laurie, I get that. In those contexts, player salaries and image rights equal or well exceed Beckham's current deal -- whether the players are healthy, injured, committed, have poor attitudes and/or in some cases engage in criminal activities.
