He-e-e-e-e-re’s Abel!
By: Laurie | June 15th, 2007
Abel Xavier (remember, it’s Aah-bel zha-vee-air) is in town and practicing with the Galaxy whilst waiting for his work permit. He may even be able to play on Sunday. This means that things will be getting better soon, right? Because change is good. At least when you’re this bad.
Oh, and this isn’t relevant to the post, but speaking of change, I’m really hoping that Canada can (pleasepleaseplease) get knocked out of the Gold Cup really quickly so we can have Ante and Kevin back.
But back to Abel. (No, I’ve never been diagnosed with ADD. Why do you ask?) Luis at Sideline Views has some interesting photos of the guys practicing, with Abel in their midst. You won’t notice him, because he’s all about blending in.
It’s funny, when the Galaxy bought Abel a month ago, I thought it was a stupid move. The Galaxy wasn’t that weak defensively and they needed help up front. But now, with the Chris Albright thing and the Tyrone Marshall thing and the Ian Russell thing… Well now Alexi and Frank and Co. are looking positively prescient.
So I’m still giving them the benefit of a doubt. For now.

Heeheeheehee. He’s coming for you, Brian. You’ll awake in the middle of the night and those little eyes will be staring down at you…

Usually players who play for both Everton and Liverpool have pretty successful careers (Ablett, McMahon, Beardsley, Barmby to name a few), but Xavier is definitely the exception to the rule. He should do fine in the MLS though, but I don’t see him lasting more than a season. Maybe it’s because I’m psychic or maybe because the Galaxy are his 12th club in 17 years.

He’s like my favorite French bad boy Nicolas Anelka, but without the mad footballing skills.

finding an bABEL-head-doll was very clever; kudos!
… And that pic makes him look like he was a supporting character in “Team America.”

Michael, as I was working on another poem for my Totally Abel Friday, I did actually consider rhyming Aaah-bel with Bob-ble.
The fact that we would both think of this is kind of scary.

He’s really not bad, in my memory. I mean, anyone who spent time on the Portuguese national team can’t be complete crap.

Portugal isn’t exactly a traditional football power. Case in point, Xavier played for the national team from 1993 to 2002, when they qualified for the World Cup Final only once and that was in 2002 when they were eliminated in the group stages. In fact, Portugal has only qualified for the World Cup Final four times in it’s history.

Brian, those of use who support Portugal prefer to think primarily of the exploits of the golden generation (granted, mostly when they were young, but still), and the last two major tournaments. And of Figo. And Rui Costa.
But I do get your point.
