Brian, those of use who support Portugal prefer to think primarily of the exploits of the golden generation (granted, mostly when they were young, but still), and the last two major tournaments. And of Figo. And Rui Costa.

Portugal isn’t exactly a traditional football power. Case in point, Xavier played for the national team from 1993 to 2002, when they qualified for the World Cup Final only once and that was in 2002 when they were eliminated in the group stages. In fact, Portugal has only qualified for the World Cup Final four times in it’s history.

Michael, as I was working on another poem for my Totally Abel Friday, I did actually consider rhyming Aaah-bel with Bob-ble.

Usually players who play for both Everton and Liverpool have pretty successful careers (Ablett, McMahon, Beardsley, Barmby to name a few), but Xavier is definitely the exception to the rule. He should do fine in the MLS though, but I don’t see him lasting more than a season. Maybe it’s because I’m psychic or maybe because the Galaxy are his 12th club in 17 years.
