Highlights from Galaxy 2-2 Chivas

By: Laurie | August 17th, 2008

For anyone who might have missed the game (or overindulged in intoxicating beverages and missed key portions of the game, like, say, Alan Gordon’s stoppage time goal), here are the highlights.

Watching this, I was struck by the fact that these were four quality goals. (And Nurse is a huge acquisition for Chivas.) Also, I hope that Alan Gordon’s goal makes his old-age chiropractic bill worth it, because that was a beauty.

If this had been last year, we wouldn’t have scored that stoppage-time equalizer. We would have just…lost. And yet we’re still in approximately the same spot in the table as we were last year at this time.

What do you think? Is the year salvageable?

If salvageable means getting into the playoffs, then
it can be done. The rest of the results in the West
continue to work mostly in our favor. As bad as the
last couple of months have been we could have been
buried and yet we’re only a point or two out. Still
I’d guess we’ll have to win a minimum of 4 (with some
draws) and more likely 5 or 6. That’s a tall order
for a team which hasn’t won in 8 tries.

Well, Laurie… our LA Galaxy has 10 more MLS games left to play in the regular 2008 season. For me, they have to capture six (6) definite wins or 18 points to be considered as a sure contender to be in MLS Play-offs. The problem: the opponents that lie ahead for the LA Galaxy are currently all leading Eastern / Western conference teams. Teams that DID actually do some positive moves during the July/Augsut transfer period. While at our LA Galaxy, there was utter bickering adn player-manager, manager-president, player-player meltdown! Personally, I want two relics from this team gone – pronto (ie: PV & GV)! The mistakes and dumbfoundedness I have seen over-and-over again thrusts me into “violent fits of disbelief” each time.
So here are the teams we have to face:
    Chicago Fire (@ Home)
    New England Revs (Away)
    Real Salt Lake (Home)
    KC Wizards (Away)
    DC United (Home)
    Chicago Fire (Away)
    Columbus Crew (Away)
    Colorado Rapids (Home)
    Houston Dynamo (Away)
    FC Dallas (Home)
To me – winning the 18 points (6 games) is do-able… however, the biggest necessity is somehow – to completely fortify and vamp up our defense. If the new Head Coach coming in can seriously achieve that, and, we as fans clearly see its improvements… then, we should be on our way. But, again – what gets me is that when 11 players step onto the pitch for a game… Every one of those 11 needs to fully commit to the results and to each other. We can’t have marginal players relying on David, Landon, Edson, Chris, and Steve to make all the advances, the defensive runs, and creative plays. All of the players must work together to achieve the end goal of making into the Play-Offs!
I can only hope / speculate that things won’t plummet any lower.
