Ian Russell Signs With Galaxy

By: Laurie | April 5th, 2007

The Galaxy have officially signed one of their trialists, midfielder Ian Russell. This makes me cheerful, since Ian attended University of Washington, where I did time in grad school. And he also spent a couple of years as a Seattle Sounder. So we just have all kinds of warm fuzzies in common.

What else can I tell you about Ian?

He’s thirty-one and has played on both right and left. He played for the San Jose Earthquakes, but according to Wikipedia “was released when the franchise moved to Houston.” (Can somebody who knows MLS history tell me what one has to do with the other? Did they, like, not want to pay his moving expenses or something?)

Or, if you prefer your news from at least semi-legitimate sources, the Galaxy website tells us that “Russell started 90 of the 131 games in which he played for the Earthquakes and logged more than 8,000 minutes of play before retiring prior to the start of the 2006 campaign.”

Released, retired. It’s all semantics, right? Welcome, Ian!

And what about trialist Kevin Harmse? (Who, by the way, made his senior team debut for Canada when he was subbed in in the 75th against Bermuda.) No news yet, but Andrea Canales of LA Soccer News said that the Galaxy were going to offer contracts to both Kevin and Ian. This would be good news, because…well… I hate to admit this, but Kevin was the little chicken I gave a name to. So I got all attached. And seeing his little head rolling in the dirt after all of this buildup would give me a truly ferocious pain in my maternal area.

So here are crossed fingers for news of a signed contract for Kevin very, very soon.

i don’t know if this counts as information but i played against ian russell in high school and in ODP tryouts. i sucked. he was amazing. not big but very fast and quick, a great jumper, excellent skills. he dribbled through our entire team until our sweeper literally threw his body on the ball. just goes to show you the gulf of ability between your decent rec player and your unknown pro players.

It’s always fun to get these “when they were normal people” vignettes.

(Oh, P.S. Thanks for the Wynalda transcript on your site. I kept coming across links to the audio, but I didn’t have the auditory energy to listen. Written transcripts are more my style.)
