If Donovan is Suspended I’ll Eat my Shirt

By: jen | September 15th, 2009

So I’ve been reading my Google alerts about the alleged Landon Donovan slap (and the “Beckham tries to choke a player!” bullshite that just comes with the site hits Beckham generates).

This story on Goal.com wonders if The Slap will result in a fine and/or suspension for Landon.

Well, The Slap and The Choke may make for good sports blog fodder, but I don’t think anything will come of it. If it had happened before the end of the game Landon may have been carded, but the whistle had blown and so it was treated by the refs as more of an, “okay guys, let’s knock it off and just head to the locker room.”

FC Dallas played a good game and spanked us in the process. They need to stop their “feline” whining, enjoy the win, and get on with it.

    I haven't been known to do that -- minus the r in shirt -- for, well . . . never! :)
  • The first time I read the headline I missed the "r" in Shirt. Thought it was a little extreme.

Jen, the best post photos, always, and Laurie, hilarious video. Agree with the photo-context. One more frame and you see a couple of players trying to separate teammates in a scuffle.

    I believe it's called a Rimshot.

The only choking Beckham does is the World Cup knockout rounds. (joke drum roll, please).

But in all seriousness, this whole suspension thing is stupid. Aren't you supposed to inflict pain in a scuffle with someone? No cards were issued, so the MLS should just let it go, or just fine them some $$$ and not suspend anyone for any length of time.

Laurie, that's too funny! Again, it's just a marketing ploy to bring attention to their site/blog/business.

That still of Becks "choking" Hernandez is hysterical! It just goes to show how taking that still out of context can be so incriminating. Riot Squad debacle notwithstanding, Beckham is a professional and I just don't see him being able to "choke" another player.
  • Thought you'd enjoy this. No idea what they're saying, but "Brutale Würge Attacke in Amerika" is kind of self-explanatory. The European press is having far more fun with this than the Americans.

    No kidding, Jen.

To me, the whole thing is dubious, given the source - both the web site reporting it and the player whining about it. I mean, Goal.com is hardly a reputable site. They take the most inocuous events/quotes and try to turn them into a major story to try to gain some credibility. But they just fail. Then tabloid-esque sites in europe just pick up on it and run with it. No serious web sites or journalists are even mentioning it.
