It’s Time for those Galaxy Friendlies to Keep Beckham Fit

By: Laurie | October 24th, 2007

Yes, the 2007 season is over. *Sigh.* Have you worked your way through the Kubler-Ross grief stages? Are you finished with denial, anger, bargaining and depression and on the road to arriving at acceptance?

Yeah, me neither.

But time moves on, and there is no rest for our Galaxy boys. Those postponed friendlies from earlier this month have been rescheduled for November. The Galaxy will be playing the Vancouver Whitecaps on November 7, and the Minnesota Thunder on November 11.

What does this mean? Well, among other things, assuming Beckham doesn’t get reinjured, it means that he’ll have a couple of games under his belt before that potentially all-important Euro qualifier game against the surprisingly strong Croatia on November 21.

And why is it only “potentially” all-important? Because England’s destiny is no longer in their hands. They lost to Russia last week — a game they desperately needed to win. So if Russia beats Israel, it’s all over for England, regardless of what happens in the England-Croatia game.

And so, Galaxy fans, decide for yourself. Are you rooting for Israel and England, for the sake of Beckham? Or are you rooting for Russia, for the sake of having Beckham at home with the Galaxy during next summer’s Euro 2008 Championships?

A moral dilemma indeed.

Thanks for the match times... I've got them on my board (the calendar thingy that rules our lives round here).

    Laurie's facts are strong.

Yeah, I'll be watching Scotland-Italy at a pub in Portland, with Scotland shirt and scarf, probably paying a god-awful cover, unless FSC runs it in which case that money will go to beer.

I didn't realize Ukraine-France wasn't until after the Scotland-Italy match. If we win in Glasgow, I will back the French. Otherwise, I have to look out for number 1 (er, 13) and root against you for selfish reasons.
  • Scotland-Italy is at 18:00 in Glasgow on November 17. (I'm assuming that's local time, but please don't rely on me. I've come close to missing games on several occasions by getting my reference time wrong.)

Ukraine-France is at 20:30 in Ukraine on November 21. Again, time caveat applies.

I'm not sure about either being televised, but if I were FSC I'd certainly show Scotland-Italy. This is one of the few groups where both slots are on the line. I watch all of my non-televised France games on JumpTV. Reliable broadband PPV but not too expensive. You can watch the delayed game for $2.95, or live for $6.95. http://jumptv.videosport.com/i...

Being a longer time Blues fan, I'm more than happy to support them against Ukraine, especially is Sheva plays for them (I realize that's near-heresy for a Chelsea fan but I'm claiming my Yankee exemption to cover me on that... I like the Sheva well enough as a player but I wasn't behind his addition to Chelsea by Rich Boy--he just didn't fit and by the look of it, my Yankee intuition was right, bwahahahah).

I'm scouring channels to find out when the FRA-UKR match is gonna be on teevee. Anyone know? Ian, know when Scotland is playing Italy? I wanna see that one too.

OK, back to watch Rangers v. Barcelona, got the DVR up and popcorn popped...

Good Job, Jack. Got the shirt and everything. Cheers. Laurie, Scotland and France going through would suit me just fine, so I'm happy to root for you over Ukraine, unless we draw with Italy, in which case I want you to lose. Complicated.
  • Jack, you have my permission to root for the Scots, provided you also root for France against Ukraine. Those are the rules and I'm standing by them.

I was gonna think of what Ian said. As much as I love my Chelsea Five on the England natl side, and as much as I admire Becks, I'm pretty stoked for my ancestral homeboys. As much as I want Israel to kick the shirt outta Russia, I'm inclined to think it's not happening this time... so I'm rooting for the Scots! Just got my national replica jersey in the mail so I'm all set!
  • Ian
For Scotland fans, there is no dilemma. Go Russia and Croatia!

On the subject of arses, reinjured my arse. I still say the foot's still crocked. Hmmm, what other two words can I use in one sentence. Sit down, sit down? I love watching Becks play, I do, but really, really only if he can do it right. (Same applies to all you guys, we really only want you fit ;-) ).
