I’ve got three words: Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes post-game analysis
By: NathanHJ | October 25th, 2009
And those words are: Western Conference champions!
In a fitting display on their home turf, the Los Angeles Galaxy put the finishing touches on a worst-to-first regular season for 2009. After a horrific 2008, the culmination of years of front-office incompetence and on-field underachievement accomplished under the glare of international media, the Galaxy put together a season that culminated in a first-in the West finish and a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. With the defeat of Columbus on Sunday evening by the New England Revolution, the Galaxy finished with the second-best record in the league, one point behind the Supporter’s Shield winning Crew and tied on points with Houston (winning on the head-to-head tie breaker).
The game itself was one of the better displays by a Galaxy team this year. Showing the kind of aggression that a superior team playing on its home field must display, the Galaxy took the game directly to the Earthquakes, dominating the first 20 minutes comprehensively. With a front six of Mike Magee, Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan, David Beckham, Chris Birchall, and Dema Kovalenko, the Galaxy put one of its better attack-minded line-ups on the field. This resulted in several chances in the first 30 minutes, including a scorching Beckham shot that just missed wide left of the goal. Landon Donovan’s goal in the 27th minute, deflecting off the leg of SJ defender Bobby Burling was typical of the Galaxy attack in the first half – lost of possession, passes to the wings, crosses into the box.
But while the aggression and approach were refreshing for a team that made its mark this year through tough defense and tenacious midfield play, the passing was often less than crisp, almost lazy. The play in the final third was plagued by easy give-aways, poor first touches, and errant passes. Everyone in the attack was at fault at some point in the game, which added a level of frustration to what was otherwise an encouraging show.
That said, it was another solid team effort that built from the back. Once again the backline and goalkeeping was steady as a rock. Todd Dunivant, perhaps the most underrated player on the field, was solid on the left, dealing with a speedy Shea Salinas with aplomb and getting forward into the attack with regularity. Gregg Berhalter did a stand-up job in the middle and in organizing the defense. Omar Gonzalez made several stops as the last defender back, defusing attack after attack. And Sean Franklin had his best game back from injury, playing at full speed without struggling and combining very nicely on the right with Becks and Birchall.
The second half of the game wasn’t quite as nice as the first, though the team again ran right at San Jose. But Mike Magee’s day was not stellar, just workmanlike and his average touch and creativity was responsible for a number of attacks that fizzled. Buddle’s game was much better than recent games, though he was not instrumental in any of the scoring. What improved the game in the second half was bringing on Eddie Lewis and then Chris Klein, who both brought veteran wiles, decision-making, and crisp passing to go with their fresh legs. They immediately improved the creativity of the Galaxy attack, even as Donovan went up top to play as a withdrawn striker. The epitome of this was the second goal of the evening which started with Beckham lauching a counter to Donovan in the middle of the park who passed wide to Klein who threaded a perfect pass back to Donovan at the top of the 18 where Donovan used his striker’s touch to beat Joe Cannon. It was beautiful.
I wonder if this means that we should start games with one of Lewis or Klein on the field, to increase the creativity on the field. I’m a fan of putting Birchall in the middle and platooning Lewis and Klein on the right (or left with Donovan on the opposite wing). Magee and Buddle up top should be a decent combination, but Magee needs to do better when he has the ball. And while I’m noting what can be better, I’m not that happy with how deep David Beckham often drops to collect the ball – as deep as Shalrie Joseph does often, but David has more offense in him than Joseph does in the normal run of things (though let me say that Joseph has plenty of offense in him). It sometimes takes Becks out of the game when he does this, though with Donovan as the intended target maybe that’s not a problem in the end. But it does make me want more Lewis/Klein on the field.
And that’s important because in order to win the Cup this year the team needs to score consistently and it’s consistently had problems putting the ball in the back of the net. Now that the team is going to be playing the elite teams in the league, offense is the piece that needs the most work. Defense wins championships, but we’ve got that this year. We still need to score. So consider that our charge. The only redeeming factor here, is that the first games of the playoffs are against Chivas, which has been having its own problems scoring lately.
But if the team takes the game to its opponents like it did last night (and playing all games at the HDC will make that easier), then it will be putting itself in the place to win. Add in the fact that the team is probably the healthiest it has been all season and the Galaxy need to be taken seriously as a team to challenge for the cup.
Playoffs for the Galaxy start on Nov. 1, Sunday, at 2PM PST (that’s the day the time change occurs to don’t let that screw you up) at the HDC with the Galaxy as the visiting team. Given the fact that Chivas can’t the stadium up, this is an opportunity for Galaxy fans to come close to parity with Chivas fans and make the game more like a home fixture. Tickets here. Le’ts make it happen.

I just checked, and Chivas tickets are a lot cheaper than Galaxy’s. Galaxy fans need to snatch these up ASAP.

I agree with almost everything you said, except the bit about Buddle. In regards to his play, what game were you watching? He managed to show his true colors and ability in front of a sold-out crowd. NOT ONCE, did he make an effort to maintain or even GAIN possesion, unless he thought he had a chance to turn it into a scoring opportunity for himself. He didn’t hustle, he didn’t try, in fact, on three seperate plays, he stopped running altogether and turned his back on goal, immediately after someone else on the team took a shot. I still say the guy has as smootheof a touch as a priest with an altar boy; clumsy and overexcited. He has no vision and no desire to improve his play for the team.
Other than that, you are absolutely right about Todd Dunivant. His contributions to the team have mostly, been overlooked all season. The back line as a whole was strong, and yes, Donovan Ricketts is the reason we are in the playoffs. Dema looked great. Klein as always, was the epitomy of the Super-Sub and offered everything he had from his first through to his las minute on the pitch. Becks was solid, but I would really love to see some of his “Pin Point” accuracy when we need it. Great, he hit the bull in K.C., he put it into the pressbox from the pitch in D.C., how about converting ONE free-kick ina match that matters. Birchall showed us the reason he was brought in. I look forward to watching him develop throughout the playoffs and next season. Magee hustled and tried, but he is far better at creating than he is at finishing. Donovan, was the Captain, and plyed as such. He was fast when he needed to be, and teacious everywhere else. One question though; WTF is with bringin on Musk-Boy Jovan, instead of Bryan Jordan. Seriously, Kirovski may as well have just sat in the center circle and watched the game. At least Jordan would have lent some energy and excitement. Oh well, the boys won and it’s time to get ready for the goats.

I purchased my Galaxy home playoff game tickets a few weeks ago, thinking that our first-round opponent would likely be Seattle. However, as soon as the Houston-Chivas game went final I was on their website, buying 2 tix for section 132 for the Chivas “home” game! $17 for sideline seats… UNREAL.
Almost makes me wanna become a Chivas fan (luckily the hatred for all things Chivas outweighs the savings in my wallet).
Why haven’t the Galaxy put up a “Western Conference Champions” banner on their website yet? MILK IT! WE DESERVE IT!

I too went through Chivas for 2 seats sect 134 first row-$52. Through ticketmaster or galaxy they were $163! I know I’ll be surrounded by Chivas fans, so I’ll be wearing my LAG gear, hopefully one of you will have my back when I stand up and cheer our first goal!

I agree, Mark Villa. I was at the game and from the stands (section 142) Buddle just looked as if he’d rather be somewhere else. He just didn’t seem to be trying.I was surprised that Nathan said” Mike Magee’s day was not stellar, just workmanlike and his average touch and creativity was responsible for a number of attacks that fizzled. Buddle’s game was much better than recent games, though he was not instrumental in any of the scoring.” To me Magee’s game looked way better than Buddle’s. I was shocked when Arena subbed Magee out instead of Buddle, and then Birchall and then Beckham. What was he seeing in Buddle that I didn’t see?

Landon is an excellent player, shows his amazing skills, is an effective player, who performs and helps his team deserves to be in Europe, Landon Donovan gives everything in a game, he knows what he is playing football!!!

New copy of FIFA 2010, $60. Battery to keep the controller powered so I can keep playing, $10. Learning that the AJ in De la Garza stands for Adolph Joseph Jr…. priceless.

Let me just note that while I thought that Buddle was better than previous weeks, I’m not saying he was objectively “good”.
I can’t speak directly to The Bruce’s subbing patterns, but with Gordon out of the game for yellow card accumulation, I don’t think there was a decent sub for Buddle. Kirovski makes more sense in the midfield than up top and Jordan’ game is significantly different from Buddle’s but too close to Magee’s for a partnership with him.
I’m not a huge fan of Kirovski’s but I think he brings more to the party than Jordan – better ball skills, better passing, better vision, and a more physical presence. But I don’t like it when either one of them are on the field.
Both Magee and Buddle need to step it up over the next two weekends because the Galaxy need way more offense than they’ve been putting out over the last month.

Hey everybody, here is one more example of just how awesome and classy the riot squad can be,take a look;

for the record, mark villa, those dudes weren’t riot squaders. if you knew people in the riot squad, you would know that they don’t fight….especially over seats (the entire section is GA style seating and they like it that way). In fact, if you go to the official Riot Squad message board they are constantly promoting non-violence in the stadium. please get your facts straight. for the record, i hardly ever sit in 138 ($50 a seat is too much) so please consider this to be un-biased.

Video was taken down, but can still be found here: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=a26_1256655385.
But that doesn’t look like the Riot Squad seats. Too far over.

Mark V…get your facts correct dude (Colin..got my back?)..I dont think your much of a true LAG fan…its obviously the section NEXT to the Riot Squad! (headshake)

Ralphyboy, I noticed that too. It looks like the guy was sitting in Sec. 137, which is just general seating (not assigned to any particular supporters’ group).
Also, fan violence doesn’t necessarily mean that a particular “group” was involved, so let’s not make assumptions. If you’ve ever sat in the pavilion seating (especially during Giants-Dodgers)at Dodger Stadium, you’d know that.
From all of my experience as an original Galaxy fan (’96!) and some experience working within the team (intern), I’ve seen nothing but class from that organization. Individuals don’t necessarily reflect the group.
Mark, our team made the playoffs. Let’s not try to knock down a supporter’s group that shows up every game and shows up with a lot of energy. We need MORE groups like the Riot Squad, and less fans like you criticizing. Here’s an open invitation to go support Chivas USA.

You’re right, I’ll give most of the riot squad the benefit of the doubt. The fact that the sucker-puncher high-tailed it into the riot squad, is, I guess not their fault. However, the few members of the riot squad that I have, dealt with (Drunken idiots who knocked me over while holding my 1 1/2 year old son, and then proceeded to both blame and try to fight me over it) have tarnished my view of the group as a whole. I guess only a few of them are hooligan-wannabe-poseurs. However, the cheer at the end of the clip, speaks poorly for the group as a whole.
Ralphyboy, Im as true a fan as any, get your facts straight. You need someone to get your back, in a blog post? What a jagoff!Posted from

-

Mark V..them are fighting words..first the “got my back” was a reference to an earlier post that apparently you didnt read or forgot about because you were so worried about everyone hearing and agreeing with your point of view. And secondly as a female I like someone having my back you judgemental douche bag! (sweet, I think colin is behind me again). And thirdly Mark, this blog is for galaxy fans and those that support the galaxy, you need to take colins invite and go someplace else and vent your poison.

Mark, I apologize for drunken fans being rude to you. I’m sure you’ll agree that drunken fans are anywhere and everywhere. As far as your particular situation goes, did you immediately contact HDC security? I assure you that AEG, the LA Galaxy, and the HDC take those sorts of things very seriously. The HDC does a lot to ensure fan safety, which is why you’ll see 2 LA County Sheriff deputies often posted above Section 138.
Again, I’m not necessarily validating what happened in the video, but let’s not blame a group that ALWAYS shows up, ALWAYS cheers, and ALWAYS supports the TEAM. Maybe you need a different outlet to espouse your apparent bitterness or anger towards them. Or maybe you need to just relax, realize that people can be jagoffs, and enjoy our #1 seeding and our first playoffs since 2005.
