Joe Cannon In Talks With DC United?
By: Laurie | December 11th, 2007
I’m a little slow on the uptake this morning, so I’m glad my brother-in-blog Jon over at DC Offside is on the ball.
Steven Goff at Soccer Insider is reporting that Joe Cannon could be headed east to the land of the oppressive summer and frigid winter. Yes, Washington, D.C.
“Sources tell me that DCU is in discussions about acquiring Joe Cannon, two-time MLS goalkeeper of the year. One source says the deal is done, but others caution that it is a complex and sensitive situation and several details still need to be worked out.”
Of course, Steven Goff is also the guy who had me over-the-moon euphoric last year when he told us that Zidane was coming to MLS. (I know I always bring that up when I talk about Goff. What can I say? I’m not over it yet.) Despite the fact that he is 98% reliable, he and I still haven’t reestablished that whole trust bond thing. So I always need independent verification of his facts. Stay tuned — I’ll keep an eye out.
Still, though. Losing Cannon? Who in my mind was the MVP this year? When we don’t yet have a solid back line to help out whoever is on the way in? When we sacrificed so freakin’ much to bring him in? Does this decision have Alexi Lalas written all over it or what?
What do you think, guys? Is Cannon headed out the door?

I hope this is just bad information. I dont want Cannon to leave Galaxy. He is way too good and he saved us so many times last season. Why would Galaxy give up Cannon? I just dont like the sound of this at all. I will really be disappointed if this is true.

C’mon Laurie. Goff is good peoples. He’s right, oh, about 99% of the time, which is better than almost all other bloggers (myself certainly included).
This trade, unless Cronin is better than I think, is not so good for you all.

I know he’s reliable, Jon. In my head. The heart, though? It takes longer to heal.

Horrible on the surface. Perkins is also connected to a player for player trade; the same Perkins who wilts in international competitions while Cannon thrives on sticking it to guys from over there. Cannon is similar to Friedel or Keller; improve with age. The only way this would work if the Polish striker is not the only European pick up and there is talk of a keeper comin as well. Still Cannon and his ever changing facial hair should be here so we can build a back four for the future. Lalas is too happy to make trades for trades sake and I hope we are not overhauling again.

Wow, after all the times Canon saved our Behinds, i hope we dont end up with a washed up keeper.. And its ture, after giving up so much for him, we keep him for 1 season?.. How i’d love to see Guillermo Ochoa in a Gal’s uniform…

Goff now has
1. A formal Scandinavian offer for Perkins that precipitated DC wanting a new keeper.
and
2. A possible three team trade with the little fish going from Dallas to LA.Posted from

Today really is a shit day to be a Galaxy fan. And its not even 2pm here on the West Coast.
I was always under the impression that Cannon’s trade was a Frank trade. Maybey you guys should try to get Hartman back. He has great head hair. Facial hair = not so much.

You know if Cannon wasn’t around for the Galaxy this last crazy season for them they would have been in a waaaaaay worse posistion. He made that team tick at times.

i think the galaxy could be thinking about their salary cap - trading cannon n shedding his $192,000 would give them space to resign albright n bring in other guys while developing cronin.

Now its the league nixed the deal because letting LA have 3 DP’s even if two were grandfathered was ridiculous. DC is still looking to make a keeper trade, but is now talking to Houston.

if it does happen it will go down on the ever-growing list of horrible trades that we have agreed to these past seasons…

CMON MLS. I don’t mind if LA has 3 DPs. They’re still not going to beat DC 2 times out of 3. Esp if we get Cannon.

What? If it’s true LA owners have no brains. To sell the best keeper with the worst dif.line…they can go and kill themselfs after that.

Thoughts of corruption. Catching up on reading after a few days away, all the $ caps look even more like B.S. to me. There’s no “even field” with all of the ways owners with more money can use it — even to get around the salary cap itself — front office staff, coaching staff, allocation shenanigans, appearance fee promises, its like the wild old days of illegal NCAA recruiting. If MLS doesn’t raise the salary cap, the league is just going to get more and more corrupt with teams spending under the table.

OK. Yahoo says that the Cannon trade deal has collapsed. If this means that he is not getting traded anytime soon, then phew!
