Joe Cannon’s on his Way to San Jose

By: Laurie | January 10th, 2008

cannon.jpgMy heart just dropped into my stomach. I’m sick.

Quakes Sign Joe Cannon

“The Earthquakes have signed Joe Cannon from the Los Angeles Galaxy for a partial allocation.

Cannon is, of course, a fan favorite in San Jose, not to mention a native of Los Gatos. Welcome back, Joe!

The Quakes have issued a press release about the signing which we expect will be on their web site soon.”

Damn it, damn it, damn it. Even though I kind of expected this, I still think it’s a bad deal for the team.

And: “a partial allocation”? That’s all? Anybody want to translate? (Bluemeanies?) My guess is that this is basically money to add to the salary cap? Which we’ll now probably use to bring in somebody like Carlos Effing Ruiz?

This sucks.

No Way..! Anyone but Ruiz..! if we are trying to gather more Cap Space, lets spend it on a decent Forward from So. America. But i think The gals feel Cronin is ready to take Canons spot, although Canon was fantastic for us last year.

You better get Beckham back at full strength and then some, because Cannon is really the biggest reason the Galaxy were not a complete failure last season. He seemed like a really good fit at LA, and it seems like a pretty bad deal to give him up for a partial cap allocation. Great for San Jose, but unless you want to be looking up at the wrong end of Real Salt Lake, LA still needs a top keeper.

Is Cronin really that good? I don’t remember seeing him play that much so it seems like he never really seriously challenged for a first team spot. I wonder what they based this decision on, salary considerations or player ability?

As he likely knows, Ian’s preaching to the choir.

Oh well. Maybe Cronin will get some good experience in MNT camp. I mean, I used to think playing Reis instead of Hartman was risky and as soon as he moved he had an excellent season. Besides, Cronin has had the advantage of learning under Cannon.

This is me looking at the bright side. *sigh*

I feel the same way. I am going to miss Cannon so much. He was my fav player on the Galaxy. I enjoyed watching him.
This sucks a lot. I wish he could have stayed with Galaxy longer than 1 season. He did some great things for Galaxy last season.

Wow why all the hate for cannon? He stood on his head against teams all year. The guy can still commandeer the pack! And Burpo can either be expendable or compete for the job. Its a good deal.

Allocation- Pixie Dust. MLS funds that have been allocated for the team to use either

    1) Toward paying a transfer fee
    2) Toward lowering a players hit on the salary cap over the life of his contract
    3) In a complex ritual involving the signing of US national team players to MLS based off of an ordering of allocations known only to few if they haven’t just switched it to the same order as the draft for simplicities sake.
    4) To play pass the potato with other MLS teams through trades until someone uses it.

A partial allocation is when a team splits the amount of money allocated in an original allocation. Don’t know how much its worth in terms of $$$.

Hate for Cannon? You must be thinking of somebody else’s blog. :-(

I loved Joe Cannon. He turned himself inside out for us last year, and I just don’t think Cronin will be able to do the same thing.

    I love bluemeanies. A wealth of knowledge…

This was a crap move by LA, and they better hope Cronin is a magician, because that’s what Cannon was. This also means we can look forward to another signing or two by the Gals.

i think these are all smart moves clearing room for some good signings (with beckham and gullit, i’m sure they know the right people to make it happen). lets just hope theres no more pavoning going on.

i do wish they would have gotten something significant out of the trade. partial allocation? eh? maybe its something they can manipulate and use for a big signing, hopefully.

Josh, I love the verb “to Pavon.” I will be adopting that in the coming season.

That news about Cannon is really sad (he even signed my brother’s Cobi Jones shirt) :( . I don’t know if we’ll be able to replace him.

Does anyone know what that Greek website says about Mathis? I actually thought he would be a good addition to Galaxy (for the right price).

Does anyone know the deal with Pavon? He was on Galaxy’s waived list, and he’s not on the team roster; but on the Galaxy website one of the photo captions says “Carlos Pavon and the Galaxy are gearing up for 2008.” Do you think this is a mistake?

Also, will Randolph be available while Jazic’s injured? If not, we may have some issues.

Now my brother’s free Cobi Jones shirt (they were given out at the last Galaxy home game of the season) is even more precious, since two Galaxy players who are no longer on the team signed it (Cobi and Cannon).

I was a little taken back by only a partial allocation – what is that, like $100,000 maybe? – since two players got traded for Cannon to get to LA in the first place. So LA cleared up, I’m guessing, something like $300,000 with this move. Is that a good thing weighing what it took for him to arrive and how he performed during the season (i.e. he was the only one who seemed to give a sh*t back there for a while)? Oh well.

    But yay for the Quakes!

Yeah, a partial allocation seems low. I don’t think a team would be able to get the equivalent of Hercules Gomez and Ugo Ihemelu in todays transfer market for a partial and the original Cannon/DC mega trade had as one of its legs Boswell + a partial allocation which was deemed roughly worth Ruiz to Dallas and Cannon was worth Ruiz to the LA brain trust. So you got what DC was willing to give up for him subtracting the 2006 defender of the year (of course you would have ended up with Ruiz and Dallas and DC would be laughing it up). From the sounds of it LA had been shopping Cannon all off season.
