Joey Franchino?!? Huh..Wha…?
By: Laurie | April 18th, 2008
I keep thinking that someday the Galaxy will make a trade that makes sense. I’m still waiting.
Soccer by Ives is saying Joey Franchino may be heading back our way.
According to a source within Major League Soccer, the Galaxy and New England Revolution are discussing a trade that would send Revs defender Joe Franchino to the Galaxy. There are no details on what the Galaxy would give up but it is believed that the package would likely consist of a draft pick.
Franchino has played just one minute for the Revs this season after sitting out most of last season following foot surgery. Here is a recent profile on Franchino in the Boston Globe.
Franchino’s professional career began with the Galaxy, which drafted him in 1998. He spent two and a half seasons with the Galaxy before Los Angeles was forced to give him up in a dispersal draft to make room for the acquisition of Luis Hernandez in 2000. Franchino went to the Revolution in that draft.
So… We’d do this why, exactly? First off, he’s thirty-one. Thirty-two before the end of the season. He took a leave of absence last year for “unspecified reasons.” He has not played much for the Revs recently. He’s spent a fair bit of time injured. And there was apparently a pretty major incident in the past week or so where he was kicked out of a Red Sox-Yankees game for being drunk and disorderly. (But the blogosphere tells us that reports of peeing in public were greatly exaggerated. Isn’t that a relief.)
On the other hand, to be balanced, this comes from the above-linked Boston Globe article:
Franchino’s presence often seems to increase the intensity level of practice sessions and helps the focus of other players. Franchino took an interest in the battle for the starting position on the left side of midfield between Mauricio Castro and Khano Smith.
“I try to lift players up in training,” Franchino said. “With Khano being challenged by Castro, I told him he should take it personally, he should come out here and compete for the position.”
I’m thinking there’s no way to tell exactly what we’d be getting here.
Sounds like exactly what we need right now.
Or…wait. No it doesn’t.

From what I’ve heard and seen of Franchino, he’s not a very nice guy. Wasn’t he suspended for fighting with Clint Dempsey during a Rev.’s practice, a couple of years ago? We already have Ruiz. Why do we need another hot-tempered player? I still don’t understand why the Galaxy traded Chris Albright. Let the Rev’s keep Franchino, let’s get Albright back.

Laurie, you said it best in the first sentence,”I keep thinking that someday the Galaxy will make a trade that makes sense. I’m still waiting.”…

Looks like they might have found someone to replace the “red card” slot vacated by Harmse. Ugh! This indicates to me, at least, that the front office just doesn’t get it (I am not blaming Ruud here - he is probably going with the info that Lalas/Bravo & perhaps C. Jones are feeding him regarding Franchino). Drew Carey’s idea of the fans being able to vote these front office guys out of positions of power is looking better every frakkin minute. Isn’t this what the Seattle Sounders are going to implement?

All New England has to do is buy a bag of balls with the draft pick they’re getting from L.A., and they’ve gotten the better part of the deal.

Holy crap, maybe they are actually trying to ruin the team, to what end I have no idea. How else can you explain the continued trades of quality players and getting crap back in return. I like the Drew Carey plan at least you know there will be a price to pay for decisions like these.

Melissa, precisely that Joe Franchino. I wonder why the Revs were willing to deal?
/sarcasmMore importantly, why were the Galaxy ready to buy? I seriously don’t get it.

Why can’t we just clone Chris Klein? All we would need to change to get a great center back is add a touch more speed and heading ability. His attitude? Perfect. His work rate? Perfect. His fitness? Perfect. His maturity? Perfect. Game reading ability? Perfect. And hell, he thinks it’s hysterical that his own son wears a Beckham Galaxy jersey.

No, Dana, Joey Franchino was NOT suspended for getting in a fight with Clint Dempsey. It was the other way around. Dempsey was suspended by the Revs for punching out Joey Franchino. It also cost him some National Team callups. Franchino was the captain of the team at the time.
I don’t care for him either, but lets keep our facts straight before we condemn the guy. I know he’s had some off-field issues last year and I hope beyond all hope he’s got them ironed out. Maybe some new scenery will be helpful to him and he, in turn, can help the Galaxy.
I suppose if I can welcome Carlos Ruiz to the team, I can accept Joey Franchino as well. We are amassing the most hated team in the league. If we can just turn it into a winning team, won’t that be sweet.

How can this possibly be better than the 3 Cubans! How can all of them not fit into Gullit’s “plans” for the team? Those were real q’s if anyone has a clue. And Jen, I want to make a poster of Klein with your exact word on it, perfect.
