LA Galaxy: Is Victory over Victory Actually Defeat?

Okay, how’s this for a great headline?

Galaxy Defeat Victory

An enigma! With, like, existential overtones! Or not, whatever.

I’m back from four fun-filled days of sun, sand and hypothermia at the Oregon coast. Did you miss me?

(What do you mean you didn’t notice I was gone?)

But at any rate. I’m back at my computer, and it’s now time to catch up on all the fun and excitement that happened while I was gone. Starting with the last Friday’s game with the USL’s California Victory, which the Galaxy won 1-0 on a Nathan Sturgis goal. The LA Galaxy website actually had a pretty good article that came up while I was gone and included the lineup, but if there’s a way to get into the archives I haven’t found it yet. But here’s Nathan’s description of the goal (from the LASoccerNews.com link above):

“The ball got played over the top to Robbie, kind of on the left side. He got by his guy on the endline and I make a run into the box. I’m not sure how it went in. I kind of collided with somebody and somehow the ball sent in.”

The goal was an especially good thing for Nathan, because he’s recovering from a groin injury. (About this type of injury. Guys, truly? As a woman, even though I KNOW you’re talking about upper thigh… Well, honestly, there are some things we just don’t want to hear about. It’s kind of like our “cramps.” Even if you know I’m talking about a charlie horse in my calf… Well, let’s just not go there, shall we?)

But anyhow. Sounds like a rough and exciting game, with Santino Quaranta getting carded for diving, even though he feels he was legitimately fouled.

“I thought I got pretty wiped out,” related Martino. “It didn’t look like it was up for question and if it was, it it didn’t look like it was anything close to a yellow card for a dive. There was a lot of contact. But these refs sometimes see a different story.”

Why do I love games like this? It feels so…so…European!!

So what does this mean for the Galaxy? 9-1-2, anyone? How’s that for a preseason record?
