LA Galaxy Offside, Version 2.0
By: Laurie | August 3rd, 2008Several folks have commented on the deadness of this blog. Many apologies! But the good news is that we’re bringing the blog back to life, better than ever.
From here on out, I’m going to be joined on this page by three co-bloggers who I think will be able to provide interesting, insightful and somewhat irreverent commentary on our beloved team. I think you’ll recognize all of these names as longtime Galaxy Offside commenters.
First, you already know Jen, and I’m thrilled to say that she’s joining us again on this page. (Unfortunately she won’t have time to write both here and on the David Beckham page. If anybody would like to take that over, drop me a note — laurie[at]theoffside[dot]com.)
Second, NathanHJ has agreed to to join us as well. He’s currently writing game wrapups every week over on Soccer by Ives, and he’ll be applying some of that analytical skill here as well.
And next… Okay, technically commenter JustJack hasn’t absolutely agreed to be here. But I’m hoping that if I name him publicly, he’ll feel guilty if he says no.
And, of course, last and least, I’m not going anywhere. And I’m really looking forward to sharing the duties here so I can focus on the things I truly enjoy. You know. The little things. Like photos of Beckham in his underwear.
Or…well…not so little.
I mean…um…
I’m done now.
Please welcome our new bloggers and leave lots of nice comments!

Yeah, and I’m disgusted. Can’t wait for the post game wrap up

Can we get Gullit fired? He obviously sucks. Take your only SOLID defender out of the game when its tied at the very end (Klein)…This is ridiculous.

to give up the 3rd goal to san jose at the 89th minute mark is complete crap! makes me feel a little disgusted as well. it just pin-balled around and couldn’t get cleared. Buddle’s goal was nice along with Donovan’s header but we need some points, were moving down the ladder right now.

moving down the ladder. yeah we are. we just lost to the worst team in the league. gullit needs to go. he obviously can’t make good decisions. unless klein got injured, i must admit i only had access to the ‘match tracker’ not actual game footage. either way, this is depressing. we can all hang up playoff chances now. houston isn’t looking back.

I missed the 1st half and some of the 2nd half so I don’t know how we really played most of the match other than some the highlights for the goals. how come our new defender Dominguez didn’t play?

because dominguez is not any better than xavier

they are both about as nimble and agile as a 2×4…

Rudd was going for broke I suppose when he brought out Klien. 1 point is fine for being on the road. this was a different san jose team for sure than the last time we played, but then again were not playing like we did back then either.

this is frustrating to watch, I use to feel going into games we should come out with a win, but now hope to have a draw or not be embarrassed. I wonder how the morale/chemistry is going on with the team behind closed doors.

Guys & Gals… Our team comes out with boisterous energy and defensive plays starting from our forwards up to our back defenders in today’s game… But, really – all for what? I don’t understand – our Galaxy players runs their bottoms off, only to get picked off and have a turn-over… Then, a couple of other players start double or triple teaming and gets back teh ball, only to get picked off again further down in their third. So all we’re doing is watching the ball go back & forth aimlessly – while getting our players tired sooner. I don’t get it… how is this team expected to play high-pressure, hi-movement soccer (like that of EPL), but at the same token not have the skill, smartness, and depth of many of the EPL players?
So the outcome – we lost yet another hard-fought game… Again, David and Landon have to walk off the pitch with their heads down and their efforts to go up in a puff of smoke. Now, granted David’s play today was quite a bit off, also.
To me – something has to give! It has to… I don’t think AEG and their plans is going to let this continue any longer. If they do – then in a couplle of games we (our LA Galaxy) will have the same standing as San Jose currently does. It just baffles me how royally this “Crown Jewel” of an MLS organization manages to screw itself repeatedly!
Sorry, gents and ladies – as you can tell, my polite mode has taken a lock-up in the trunk and rage & frustration are now in the drivers seat. I have turn off the TV, turn up the “calming nature music”, and breathe heavily into a paper bag.Posted from

So many problems.
BTW the LA Times reported that Ruud is selling his house in Hollywood Hills…good news ahead?
We all know the problems today. Let me gripe about player selection.
I was mad 20 minutes before the match when I saw Tudela wasn’t even on the f!@#$%^ bench. This guy has way more soccer sense than Vagenas (more on that in a sec) and Vanney..awful again, repsonsible for 2 goals at least (the third was too crowded for me to see.)
Does Pete have naked photos of Lalas or Bravo..I can’t figure this out. I have not seen a game in 2 years where Pete has outplayed Tudela on a bad day. Everybody is talking trade stuff, I have 2 ideas for a better use of Pete’s salary.
1) A really expensive caution pylon – won’t do any harm and might win a challenge with someone running at it
2) A german sheperd – why pay a huge salary for someone to run aimlessly at a ball when a dog will do it cheap. Also, Pete’s best play of the day i when he stepped over a ball (seriously). My dog excels at this…hell my cat does too. A dog would also be equally good at randomly moving the ball around with little success at pass completion. So my trade choice Vagenas for a German Sheperd and Vanney for a pylon (or a cardboard cut-out of Franklin)
Kudos to Franklin. My buddies in Sec 133 call him the Eraser,…he removes the mistakes of the other defenders, and usually fixes his own as well. Glad to see him back.Randolph had some good stuff…anyone else think he’s looking a little chunky, though.
Please, give us the Randolph, Tudela, Beckham, Klein midfield we need for playmaking.
The defense..man, I’m out of ideas at this point.Posted from

I think a few of the players on the team can play high pressure quick movement similar to EPL, but the remaining can not resulting in this kind of finish (working their butts off and not coming up with the win). I don’t think this will ever work for the Galaxy or other teams (MLS) with out having the depth/cap space available to them to pull the smarter/skilled players. I look forward to the day our league will be playing at this level. I agree something has to give, AEG will not be happy having the season going this direction, down the ladder but I’m not sure anything can be done. What a disappointment having this new defender come on board and have him not even playing.
Dallas won their game against Toronto so that moves us another step down!

Time to sell my MLS cup tickets! I am only hoping we finsh above the smurfs, but who knows. They have aquired some good pick-ups during the transfer window, and we have picked up nothing.
Ruud was quoted as saying he is selling his home because his wife doesn’t like the house.
I hope heads will roll now, but they way things have gone, nothing will happen. We will soon be sitting at the bottom of the west. I am just bitter about our downhill slide.Posted from

“So my trade choice Vagenas for a German Sheperd and Vanney for a pylon (or a cardboard cut-out of Franklin)”
Oh Steve, thanks for the laugh!!!
Ahh, I don’t know what to do. I don’t think it’s Ruud’s fault. Instead of firing yet another coach I’d like to see Lalas go and the shift of control go squarely to the coach and director of soccer. Because Lalas has been the constant these past years and no matter the coaching change the result has been crap (sooner or later). I think Ruud has the ability to get the most out of marginal players — he has demonstrated that so far this season — and let’s face it, with our three DPs the only depth we have is with marginal players.
So is it really fair to tie Gullit’s hands and then blame him for most or all of the problems? We (they — whoever) did that to Yallop last year and he took the fall for it. Gullit is a better coach than Yallop, or at LEAST more suited to the Galaxy than Yallop was.

Folks, until ownership WANTS this situation to change it will not.
Think we could pick up some defenders from a 7-8 year old league somewhere? They will usually work for pizza and snow cones. I think that would get them under the cap.
Steve,I get your point but this group does not remind me of a German Shepherd , they have instincts, heart, and never give up. No, this group of defenders is akin to watching a pack (because collectively they have a CHANCE), of Basset Hounds. They wander yelping and barking but not really sure where their prey is. They distract easily and have been know to get their canine rears kicked by the likes of Possums and Squirrels.
The above works because our poor goalkeeper is beginning to remind me of that screaming squirrel in the tire commercial. Every time someone approaches the goal all he, the local animals, and the crowd begin to scream in terror in the hopes the attacker will swerve away.
Ugh, this is getting ug-lee!

Hey guys. I was at the game and it had some amazing atmosphere. Every time Donovan touched the ball, there was a loud chorus of booos and everyone in attendance chanted “Beat LA” quite a few times. Great game. And yay for JustJack posting! Do it!

Laurie: Are you coming down to PDX for the flounders funeral tomorrow?
If you come to the pub and introduce yourself I will buy you your drink of choice – I’ll be the one wearing green and shouting incoherently.

Lucas, too funny. I WILL actually be in Portland tomorrow, but unfortunately I have to be at a memorial service for a distant elderly relative-by-marriage. Otherwise that would be fun. Thanks for the invite!
