Landon Breaks the Record! Kind of. Maybe.

By: Laurie | January 20th, 2008

landon2.jpgLandon Donovan officially broke Eric Wynalda’s record for US goals scored last night.

That is US Soccer’s story and they’re sticking to it.

Landon fired off a penalty in the 48th minute of the US’s 2-0 win over Sweden last night, a goal which brought him to a total of 35 international goals.

Or 34. Depending on who’s counting.

Seems FIFA doesn’t consider last January’s game against Denmark, in which Landon also scored a penalty, to have been a full international game. They claim that Denmark didn’t field their “A” side. No “A” side, no international status, no goal counting towards the US record.

The guys at US Soccer have protested the decision and sent FIFA copies of the game contract saying it was an international, and they are appealing to Denmark for support. Until they, they’re proceeding as if the Denmark game counted.

If the FIFA ruling is overturned, Congratulations Landon!!

If not… Well, at least he’s still only twenty-five, right?

Seems FIFA goes out of it’s way to stick it to the US most of the time! Congrats to Donovan, but I want to see more goals from him other than PK’s, lots of PK’s :)

I think my favorite story on last night’s game so far is from Jeff Carlisle:

Upon depositing his 48th-minute penalty kick past Swedish goalkeeper Rami Shabaan, Donovan enthusiastically grabbed the ball as a souvenir, the assumption being that he’ll keep it in his trophy cabinet. But when asked about his plans, Donovan hinted at other possibilities.

“I don’t know, [maybe I'll] sell it, just like Barry Bonds,” Donovan joked. “It would go for about 20 cents.”

Sweden sure as hell didn’t field their A team. Neither did we. Lets see if FIFA decides to nullify this game as well.
