Landon has Swine Flu

By: jen | August 14th, 2009

It seems this is the reason his play was a little flat on Wednesday.

“I haven’t felt that way in a game in a long time,” Donovan said from Los Angeles. “During the game and even after the game I thought maybe it was the altitude, the heat, whatever. But even so I’ve never felt that bad. The last time I was there [at Estadio Azteca] I didn’t feel that bad. I just felt lethargic, slow. I didn’t feel normal.”

Grant Wahl’s article has all the information. (Thanks to reader Glen for the heads up.)

Get better soon, Landon.

Jesus C... Lenny When and where in the US are riot police needed for a player to safely take a corner kick. If it was only a few, the police would have pulled them out of the stands. Throwing urine and vomit nice, I can live with the disrespect of booing the National anthem but the rest needs to be dealt with. "el Trio" need to pay for this but the weak at CONCAFAC will do nothing.

Wow. Hideous in every way!!! Thanks for the source, Nicole. But still YUCH YUCH YUCH. They should have been kicked out immediately. Looks like all the officials were having a bit of trouble keeping control during that game -- on and off the field.
  • Nicole
And I'm not condemning all the fans of Mexico - just those that threw things onto the field, including bottles and these assorted cups. They should have been kicked out, but weren't. The majority of the fans are awesome people and just have love for their soccer team. Even Landon has said they're not bad people at all, very friendly, and they're just supporting their team as any fan should do.

But as we all know, it's the disgusting acts of a few that ruin it for others. Teams that are forced to play to empty stadiums, it's because of the fan bad fans, not the many good fans.

Diane, it was from an AP soccer story. Reporter was apparently eye witness to it. The fan took a drink of his beer, then stuck his finger down his throat and puked it into the cup. His buddy took a drink of his beer, then literally peed into it, right there in the stands. Then they threw the cups and high-fived one another. Do a search on the internet, you'll find the story and everybody writing about it.

Nicole, I wouldn't put anything past football fans in any part of the world, but are we sure about the source of the vomit and piss story? The vomit I find particularly hard to believe. Yuchy too.

As to references to any country a team or their fans in any sport come from, dangerous generalizations -- the bombing one more specifically dangerous of course.
  • Lenny
FIX - There are good and bad people in every culture and in every country.
  • Lenny
Yes, the fans that cross the line of decency are scum. Don't make the mistake of demonizing the majority for what a few have done. There are good and bad in every culture and in every country.
  • Glen
CONCACAF is very spineless when it comes to these maters. Any country that hosts a match and their fans act like this should have consequences, period. I don't see too many fans from this country acting this way but if it happens, so be it. It must take people who are just scum/sick of the earth to want to pee or vomit into a cup and throw it at a opposing player. Granted soccer/futbol is all a lot of these countries have to look towards but damn one has to shake their head still.
  • Lenny
To be fair, there are neanderthal fans in the USA as well.
  • Nicole
Do you guys know what was in those cups? Not just beer and Coke.

According to a newspaper report - some of those cups had pee and vomit in them. Two Mexican fans - one took a swig of beer and then stuck his finger down his throat, puked into the cup; the second fan drank some of the beer and then urinated into the cup. They high-fived and then threw them at him.

How sick and disgusting is that? Animals don't even behave that way. Any other confederation, there would be sanctions and Mexico would probably have to play home matches in an empty stadium. But not CONCACAF. Very corrupt.

POST ABOVE- I should note that Riot Squad poster was talking about Mexico.
  • Lenny
Taken from the Riot Squad board in reference to LD's illness...

"Please Lord...if you REALLY are there...bomb that country into the water."

I was really offended by this statement. Wishing this on anyone because of competitive soccer (or any other reason) is SICK. Some people need to grow up!

Just read somewhere that it was a team administrator and a chiropractor... and since we only have one of each AND that information can easily be found on the LA Galaxy website (or if you worked/interned there for a period of time..), you can pretty much narrow it down...

Hope everyone (staff and players included) are fine!!!
  • jen
That's right, Diane. He likely caught it from two Galaxy staff members who were diagnosed with it and had it at the New England match last Saturday.
  • Colin
Yeah, Diane, I guess they're saying he got it BEFORE he even left for Mexico... I wonder which Galaxy staff member got it... hmmm...
  • Diane
I thought two of the Galaxy staff came back from New England with it? Anyway, sorry to hear he was sick, I thought the flying projectiles were bad enough. Sure, no pig's head, but still...
  • Well shucks man, it did seem like quite the coinky-dink at first… given that he was in swine-flu land. But hey, I’d hate Mexico anyway. Not out of xenophobia, but because they don’t have a single player who’s not a total jackass.

If Lamps or Rio came back from some third world country with some bizarre illness I think you guys over there would get a little curious too.
