Let’s All Bunker! (Because it’s a GOOD thing)
By: Laurie | October 5th, 2007
I want you to read a sentence from the Columbus Dispatch, written after the Columbus-Galaxy game.
“Columbus attacked with nine men — including sub Kei Kamara, who took three shots in the final 12 minutes – but could not break through a bunkering Galaxy defense.”
Did the phrase “bunkering Galaxy defense” make anyone else smile?
Seriously, when was the last time anybody wrote anything positive on our defense? I’ve seen words like “porous” and “young” and “inexperienced” pretty frequently. But “bunkering”?!? I think this has become my newest favorite descriptive word.
(What do you mean this particular usage is not in the dictionary? It should be.)
This is even more impressive given the fact that Abel Xavier was injured for this game, meaning our back line consisted of Chris Klein, Ty Harden, Troy Roberts and Mike Randolph, aka Chrissie and The Minimum Wagers.
So let’s hear it for the Galaxy defense and positive press.
(Because we’re playing Houston this weekend, so this may be it for awhile.)

Although I’m well aware the term “gutted” has been around for a very long time, I’ve started using it in regular conversations just because of Frank Yallop.

The Brits have brilliant terms for tough defenses. Can’t recall them at the moment.. I’m doing this while I wait for my interview at an Apple Store to start. Hee hee.
