Lilian Thuram Linked to a Move to WHERE?
By: Laurie | March 18th, 2007
In general, I try to ignore unsubstantiated rumors that have absolutely no (none; zilch; zip; nada) possibility of being true. I may cover the sensational occasionally, but I do try to stay away from the completely insane.
But when these unsubstantiated rumors involve my favorite player in the universe… Well, what happens is, reading them affects me like a triple espresso, and my heart starts to pound, and my palms start to sweat… And when this occurs, I just have to share.
A three-line entry from a French football blog (I know! credible, huh?) tells me that rumors coming out of Spain say that France’s most-capped (126) international player Lilian Thuram is considering a move to the Galaxy. (Yes, his first name is Lilian. It sounds less girlie in French. And a warning here: If you dis Lilian… Well, if this happens, we cannot be friends.) He moved to Barcelona this year and is less than happy not being a member of the starting 11.
Why did our French blogger friend pick the Galaxy? I have no clue. I’m not even sure Thuram speaks English. Maybe he and Becks are buds.
Among the multitude of reasons this can’t possibly have any basis in fact:
•LA already has Designated Player issues, or will next year when Landon is no longer grandfathered in
• There’s no way a player of his stature would play under the salary cap
• The guy is 35 years old. (He may be a god, but he’s not a young god.) Why would he learn an entirely new style of play at this age? If he’s going to continue playing, a return to a previous league, like Italy’s Serie A, would be more likely.
•He’s already said that he’s getting close to ready to do things like devote his life to the disenchanted and disenfranchised immigrant youth in the ugly banlieues of France. (One of the main reasons I love the guy!)
And in the yes, this could actually happen column, we have… Let’s see…
Oh, I’ve got one! Because Laurie wants it to happen. And we all know how much weight that carries!!

I share your love for Thuram (which is why I was so delighted he moved to Barca), but I’m hoping he stays at least another year. Recently he has been starting every game (okay, partially due to Marquez’s horrid form, but also because he’s been great since coming back from injury), and doing pretty well.

BWG, has he really been starting at Barca? My Google Alerts (and Alertes Google) have ignored this fact. I even got an article in the past few days saying how frustrated he is over the Barca situation. BUT I didn’t check the date. E-mail can be a funny thing, sometimes sending things weeks late.
So if he’s happy at Barcelona… Well, then I’m happy.
Although I’d probably be happier if he were somewhere close where I could keep an eye on him.

Yeah, I think he’s the automatic starting center-back alongside Puyol now. Great work coming back from injury to claim a starting spot, especially at his age.
(Him and Oleguer were at an event promoting the Catalan language the other day - something to do with Catalunya’s French connection. Those two are quite a pair - Oleguer being Barca’s other resident activist.)
