Mathis Traded to Galaxy?

By: Laurie | November 19th, 2007

mathis.jpgBoth Ives Galarcep and Steven Goff are reporting that Clint Mathis has been traded to the Galaxy for a third-round draft pick. Yes, that Clint Mathis, heading back to the Galaxy.

From Steven Goff:

SECAUCUS, NJ (Monday, November 19, 2007) – Red Bull New York announced today that it has acquired a 2008 third round SuperDraft pick from the Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for midfielder/forward Clint Mathis. “By acquiring this pick, we will now be able to have a selection in every round of the 2008 SuperDraft. This allows us more flexibility moving forward,” said Red Bull New York Technical Director Jeff Agoos. “This was a very difficult decision but I would like to thank Clint for his work this year and wish him the best of luck in the future.” Mathis is the Red Bulls’ all-time leading goal-scorer in all competitions with 45, breaking Giovanni Savarese’s record in a 5-4 win over the Galaxy on August 18. The Conyers, Ga., native served his second stint with the Red Bulls in 2007 after being acquired from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a 2008 fourth round MLS SuperDraft pick and a conditional pick in 2009. This season, Mathis played in 26 games, starting in 19 and scoring six goals and two assists.

So how does this thing work? Mathis’ salary this year was $410,000. There’s no chance we’ll be paying him that, but I doubt that he’ll come cheap, either. I have some serious questions about bang for the buck, but I’ve been wrong before. And I like Clint Mathis, so this could be a good thing.

Plus it also gets rid of one of those pesky draft picks that have been piling up, so there’s that to consider.

I doubt he’s getting paid much into six figures at this point, surely. How’s he going to fit into the Galaxy’s lineup? Is a slow pudgy guy really a good target for Beckham?

I like Clint Mathis, but I don’t see how he’s gonna fit into the bigger picture on building this team, besides what he’s getting paid… they better kick Clint’s a** into shape because he needs to be fit.

    Aaaaarrrrgh!

Didn’t we trade Shavar Thomas for a 3rd round pick? Didn’t he play like a serious contender for CUSA Defender of the Year? Wouldn’t this mean a potential local team Defender of the Year traded for the biggest wasted potential player in US futbol?

I have to admit I haven’t seen him play recently, but in theory he would be a good forward for the artistry of Donovan and Beckham as long as he’s not finishing in the air. He is good at reading developing plays. He could also take the place of or substitute for Martino. (sorry Laurie)

Does anyone know what Mathis’ status will be regarding the expansion draft? Perhaps no one cares.

The thing I find funniest is we get back yet another talent that really blossomed after he left the Galaxy. As far as player movement goes, the past two years have been a huge joke.

All I can say is why? Doesn’t make sense to me. I just read the list of protected players:

Chris Albright, David Beckham, Edson Buddle, Joe Cannon, Landon Donovan, Ty Harden, Ante Jazic, Chris Klein, Carlos Pavon, Mike Randolph and Troy Roberts.

Edson Buddle and Carlos Pavon? I think Glinton played a lot better than either of these 2. Who is making these decisions? I think Yallop was smart to leave.

    He had a great season.

He was crapped on by Arena and rode the bench.

And he showed that, when motivated, he is a player. You guys have an amazing pick up and you dont even know it. A 3rd rounder? Come now. This sucks.

He is experiencing quite a renaissaince. Laurie and your beloved Hollywooders will love em. Damn you.

Im gonna go watch Metalocalypse again. This sucks.

Dave, you have to understand, it’s nothing personal. It’s just that we’ve gotten burned on this kind of thing before, receiving players who are just past their sell-by date and who don’t quite fill the holes that the team needs filled.

I’d love to see this not be more of the same, but given that we still have the same front office, I’m not so sure.

Dana, I would have kept Glinton over Pavontoo, and even let him go before Buddle. Pavon looked like he was trying but he had too many chances to prove himself which he missed for the money. Maybe he’s brilliant in practice and they think it will translate sooner or later but it was tough to watch.
