Meet Galaxy Draft Pick Bobby Burling!

burling.jpgYou know why I love blogging about draft picks? So much hope and joy. And the college papers and the hometown papers get in on the act, and we get all kinds of fun details about Aunt Betty Jean and Uncle Jed…

Or in the case of the Galaxy’s final draft pick from the Super Draft, Bobby Burling, we find out that “He is the son of Jim and Micci Burling of Monument and the grandson of June and the late Jim Burling of Carthage. Cousins Dick, Jodi, Michael and Mason Burling of Carthage and Ronnie, Ryan and Kevin Burling of Morris attended the SuperDraft party at the Burlings’ home in Monument on Jan 12.”

I LOVE this stuff. I wish I’d been invited to the party. (And this is me actually being serious here. Well, I mean, aside from the fact that I hate going to parties with people I don’t know. I’m talking IN THEORY, okay?)

Bobby was the number 45 pick in the SuperDraft, and the final one for the Galaxy. He attended Loyola Marymount University, finishing his business degree a semester early so he’d be available for the draft. (And this is where our US guys have it head and shoulders over the Europeans. We’re talking brains. Can anybody imagine Wayne Rooney finishing a business degree? A semester early?)

I’ll pause while you clean up the Pepsi you just snorted all over your computer screen.

Okay, moving on. Bobby’s from Monument, Colorado. He’s listed on the LMU website as a forward, but he played defense for much of his senior year. According to CSTV, “He led the Lions in scoring in 2006 despite playing defense for most of the season, finishing the season with four goals and five assists, with two goals and four assists coming in WCC games.” Impressive.

And of course, all of the articles about our Bobby have the requisite “How do you feel about playing with Beckham?” questions, and Bobby provides the expected and standard “It’s an awesome opportunity to play with him and Landon Donovan” response.

Good boy. And I know this is probably how he actually feels (and how I would feel in his place.) But every once in awhile, don’t you just kind of wish somebody would say, “I think he’s a wanker and I can’t wait to land a kick in his GoldenBalls”?

Or is that just me?

But anyhow. Welcome to the Galaxy, Bobby Burling!

The Lions must have sucked pretty bad if their leading scorer is a defender with only 4 goals to his name. :)
