Meet Galaxy Draft Pick Robbie Findley! (OR: I Am Already SO Bored With Beckham!)
By: Laurie | January 25th, 2007
Galaxy acquisitions are going to be big news this year. Not just because of that DB midfielder, but because LA kind of sucked last year, tying for last place in Western Division.
And LA fans and owners are now shrieking at their computer screens, “NO! We were SECOND-to-last!!” Because we all know that goal differential makes ALL the difference.
But anyhow. LA’s draft picks. I was going to blog all of them in one post, but I decided that
a) they all deserve individual attention, and
b) if I blog them separately, that’s SEVERAL Beckham-free posts
So! Meet Robbie Findley! Formerly of Oregon State University, home of The Beavers! Yes, that’s right, our Robbie is a Beaver. This is fun for me, because I actually have an OSU connection — a family member went there for a year. (Which led to a mildly surreal Thanksgiving dinner table conversation, with my elderly mother-in-law declaring, “Now, Rose, you know you ARE a Beaver!”)
But…um…yeah. (Sorry, too much caffeine this morning.) Back to Robbie.
Robbie’s a forward, twenty-two years old and 5′9. He has dual citizenship, US and Trinidad and Tobago. (And for those of you with geography-phobia, “Tridinad and Tobago” is exactly one country.) Jeff Carlisle at ESPNsoccernet describes him as “an excellent pick,” and Ridge Mahoney of SoccerAmerica says he’s “a powerful, athletic, marauding forward [who] blasted an impressive goal at the combine and showed some adaptability by playing as a midfielder, both centrally and on the flank.”
And MatchNight’s Buzz Carrick says, “Clearly the best forward at the combine. Finley is the first ever Oregon State player to be named to the Pac 10 first team three times, an impressive feat in such a talented conference. Findley has dual US and Trinidad and Tobago citizenship, and has been in some U23 camps for T&T. After starting out with the Pac 10 Freshman of the Year and second team nods back in 2003, Findley put up some nice balanced career numbers with 28 goals and 15 assists. Not real big at 5′9″, Findley gets it done by athleticism and pace as well as some good soccer savvy.”
Sounds like an excellent pick. I am really looking forward to seeing this guy play.
And last but not leat, Robbie grew up looking up to Beckham and is excited at the thought of actually playing with him, which I find kind of endearing.
Go, Robbie!
