Meet the Anti-Beckham

sebastien-chabal.jpgThis has nothing to do with soccer, but I thought some Beckham fans and non-fans alike might enjoy meeting the “anti-Beckham.”

Say hello to Sébastien Chabal of the France National Rugby Team. There’s been a bit of discussion on my France (soccer) page about what, exactly, makes this guy so damn sexy.

(Sexy? Well…y’know…so I’ve heard.)

I got hooked on rugby when I was in Paris for the start of the Rugby World Cup. And I couldn’t help but notice Chabal, and how fascinated people are with him, despite the fact that he doesn’t match the good-looking Beckham-esque stud stereotype. Why is this?

One blog says it’s because he is the Anti-Beckham.

“Sébastien Chabal is the antithesis of Metrosexual – or-David Beckham — this “urban narcissist” … Far from all this [wax and creme metrosexual] rubbish, Chabal has a natural charm that lets us glimpse qualities such as humility and sincerity.”

What do you think, folks? Which one qualifies for your crush, man-version or otherwise?

(P.S. The baby is apparently his own daughter, and the photo came to me with the title, “Chabal Eats Babies.” Hysterically funny, in a quease-inducing kind of way.)

  • David, If pushed I might say that he's actually very good looking as is.

    I mean...um...yeah. Rugby. LOVE rugby.

have you seen this guy when hes well shaved and his hair short? hes actually very good looking with short hair
  • Thank you for the post ;-)
It was just a women thought.....
  • The iconic thing about him is that he's actually got a degree in management or something. How many football players can say that?

(A couple of the All Blacks are trained lawyers. This is the fact I bring out everytime people try to argue that rugby players are all stupid.)

Being a rugby fan myself, what impresses me about Chabal is the fact that anyone else playing rugby at even the college level would get that hair pulled out in his first five minutes. Ruggers don't shave their heads because it looks pretty. You have to be tough to survive with that kind of hair. I like Chabal, and I do like having a sports icon in Europe who doesn't carry a man purse.
  • Yeah, that game was a heartbreaker. I turned it off as England was getting ready to kick the winning goal something like six minutes before time, after France had led the entire game. It was too heartbreaking to watch.

Too bad his country won't be winning anything in the World Cup. That's pathetic considering it's being held in their country and they just easily won the Six Nations earlier this season.

I watched the quarter-final against the Kiwis and when this guy came on the pitch as a substitute the energy in the ground went through the roof. The crowd loves him even if he doesn't do that much. He definitely a compelling person to look at. He's huge though. Seeing him stand next to other rugby players (who aren't small) and dwarf them.

"Chabal has a natural charm that lets us glimpse qualities such as humility and sincerity.” Maybe it's the perspective and cropping in the rugger shot that just makes me think, "quintessential mouth-breathin' knuckle-dragger" not "humility and sincerity." Look how long his damned arms are and how small the head on the torso.... yipe! It wasn't till I scrolled and saw the baby-as-rugby-ball image that grabbed me. It works on so many levels: humor, passion, thief, fathers hide your daughters, damn his woman is lucky, or not... Humility and Sincerity? Um.... no. wild man, Iron Jean, renaissance man, sure. Finally a dude with facial hair. I wanna be his buddy, tu sais?
  • That man's arms are as big as my head.
