Mike Randolph at U-23 Training Camp
By: Laurie | December 6th, 2007I’m a bit late on this as well, but I did want to pass on the news for anybody who hasn’t heard that our very own
is currently appearing at the U-23 training camp, the group that will, with luck, be heading to the Olympics.
Is our Mike just a wonderful Cinderella story or what? He plays a year in college, then goes to the USL team Portland Timbers, where he’s named [correction: one of three finalists for] Rookie of the Year and catches the attention of MLS. He’s signed by the Galaxy last September, but looks to be a perennial benchwarmer until the overcrowded schedule takes out all of the starters. He gets his chance, makes the most of it, and voila! A chance at the Olympics.
I love stories like this, especially coming in the off season, where a) there’s nothing to write about, and b) we’re going to be talking a lot about players leaving the team.
Go, Mike!
UPDATE: This didn’t warrant a full post, but after I wrote this I found a short article on the pride of Mike’s parents that made me happy.
(Oh, by the way, Robbie Findley and Nate Sturgis are at the camp too. Did you want to know that? Probably not.)
The full roster is here.

It seems like only yesterday when Mike Randolph got his big break subbing in for Ian Russell after he injured himself chasing a ball across the field… Those who can’t do and all that…

Very happy to see Randolph doing well; would be great to have a former Timber to root for on the US team. He was a fan favorite in his season here in Portland (btw, he didn’t win ROY that season, Seattle’s Cam Weaver did). Good luck, Mike!

One of the most promising players we have. Great he is with us…shame Glinton isn’t.
