MLS Player Salaries Revealed!
By: DAS | May 14th, 2011
Every year about this time the MLS players union releases the salaries for all the players in the league. There is something tawdry about how excited I get, looking over our players’ personal incomes. I feel like an honorary member of the yenta-net, gossiping about who makes the most money.
The players union initially released salaries a few years back to shame the league out of paying so little. At the time, I think first year players were making something like $14,000. Can you imagine living on that in LA or NY? It’s not even minimum wage.
Relative to other American sports the current salaries are a little embarrassing, but they are at least better than they once were. The minimum now seems to be about $32.6k. And a lot of players are making more than that. You can find all of the salary information at the player’s union’s website: http://me.lt/2×7Nu.
Soccer America did a nice summary of the top 50: http://me.lt/6n7×8. No surprises at the top. It is sobering to think about the fact that one of the highest profile athletes in the world, David Beckham, earns a salary about a fourth of his cross town compatriot, Kobe Bryant.
The Galaxy salaries break down as follows:

So what does the picture at the top have to do with all this? Nothing really. It just came up when I did a Google search on soccer gossip and I thought it was funny. But I do wonder if that’s how Bryan Jordan felt when he read that 16-year old Jack McBean will make nearly twice what Jordan does this year….
