More Thoughts on the SuperLiga Game and Other Galaxy Stuff
By: Laurie | August 17th, 2007Okay, first off, I just read a post-game recap that said the Galaxy was playing 4-3-3 on Wednesday. Huh…what? I could have sworn Landon Donovan was playing midfield. Have I lost my mind? If you saw it on TV or broadband, what was the listed starting lineup? (And no, I wasn’t paying attention when they announced who was playing where. I was too busy trying to figure out how Beckham had gotten to be the captain.)
Speaking of midfield, these guys impressed the hell outta me. For once. And that’s true even for the subs, who didn’t curl up and die once Beckham left the field. Seriously, the midfield made an unbelievable difference in this game. A DC attacker would be one on one with a Galaxy defender, and I’d be thinking, there’s no way he’s going to hold him off. And then all of a sudden we’d have a midfielder there breaking things up. It was like the scene from the original Star Wars, when Luke Skywalker’s doing battle with the Imperial forces? And you’re thinking, “He can’t do this on his own. He is so dead.” And then, BAM! BAM! BAM! It’s Han Solo! Saving the day! Where the hell did he come from?
Ummm…yeah. That’s kind of what it was like. With Donovan especially, but also with Martino and Vagenas and Cobi and Harmse and yes, even with a not-fully-fit Beckham. They were almost everywhere they should have been. I ended up thinking, “Oh. Yeah. I remember now. That’s how it’s supposed to work.” And when they got the ball, they didn’t even automatically turn it over, either. I’d forgotten what that was like.
Speaking of Kevin Harmse, I read a great quote this morning from DuNord: “LA midfielder Kevin Harmes is a serious bruiser. He takes no prisoners. I would bet his rough style causes a fight before this season is over.” Heehee. Yup. That’s our Kevin.
And a quick word about Mike Caso, who I got to see warming up on Wednesday. I hope nobody took my previous post as an insult to Mike himself. It’s not! I’m looking forward to seeing him be hugely successful on the team. My bemusement is with the silent, hidden process LA used to bring him on board, not with the player himself. So go Mike!!
