Ngwenya Heads Abroad
By: Laurie | January 23rd, 2008
Sorry about the lack of updates this week. I’ve been having lots of fun helping to cover the African Cup of Nations over at our sister site, World Cup Blog. It’s fascinating but a bit time-consuming. I’m watching two games a day most days. Yes, my butt is tired.
Back to normal soon, especially with the preseason starting…when? Very soon, right?
And this isn’t technically Galaxy related, but if you haven’t seen the news, former Galaxy guy Joseph Ngwenya has headed to Austria. Specifically to the team SK Austria.
If he were still playing for the Galaxy, I’d say, This sucks. But since he’s not I can say, Best of luck Joseph! Make lots and lots of money! We’re still waiting from that postcard from Clint Mathis, but we know YOU’LL come through for us.
(Let’s look at the big picture, though. Is this a Beckham side effect? The fact that European leagues are willing to consider MLS players? We’re seeing a whole slew of them heading to Europe this off season. Ngwenya, Eddie Johnson, Pat Noonan, probably Brad Guzan. And maybe a few more who are slipping my mind. What’s your opinion on this?)

I think there seems to be more MLSers leaving for higher salaries in 2nd tier leagues abroad. Troy Perkins, Noonan, Arguez (though bundesliga is not 2nd tier), TT (if NE would have let him go) and others. I think Ngwenya had the goal of the year last year - the one where he sends the ball around Curtin one way, goes the other and then slots it home from a narrow, narrow angle. Maybe the league is getting more exposure…

Our top MLSers are still getting lowballed in the money deparment. I think other leagues think we’re still a cheap resource for decent talent.

We are still a cheap resource for decent talent. Euro clubs should send reps to the MLS SuperDraft and sign all the 17- and 18-year-olds.
