Now Fabien Barthez is Linked to the Galaxy?

By: Laurie | May 7th, 2007

barthez-ronaldo.jpgIt seems that there are three requirements that must be met in order for a player to be linked to the Galaxy.

1) Is he over 30?
2) Is he European?
3) Is he currently in what we might euphemistically call a “transitional phase” of his career?

Yes to all three? Well, he must be coming to the Galaxy!! Most recent unsubstantiated rumor? Which, of course, has NO chance of being true?Former France National Team goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.

The first thing that happened when I read this rumor was that I burst out laughing. And then I rushed to the kitchen to suck down some dramamine and a couple of tequila shots. And the whole time I’m thinking, heck yeah! Let’s dump the solid, stable Joe Cannon just because Barthez’s erratic eccentricities are so much fun to watch!!

Don’t get me wrong. My heart belongs to the France NT, and because of this I adore Fabien. If by “adore” we mean, “I want him to go out of his professional goalkeeping life as something other than “The guy the fans attacked because his team, Nantes, is getting relegated.”

But if by “adore” we mean, “I want him playing on my team”? Nuh-uh. Sorry Fab. You know I love you, but Sweetie? Check back with me when you discover the magic of the opposable thumb.

Because Fabien has this terrifying habit of batting away balls he could catch. Which can be okay when you have an amazing back line right there to clear them, like on the France NT. But otherwise?

Well, I love you, Fab, but Joe Cannon’s my guy now. Try to understand.

Yeah, this would be a bit of a bonehead move for the Galaxy, and I can’t see it being true. Your guys are not the perfect team, but Joe’s a perfectly good keeper. And it is nice to keep a few Americans on your MLS side, just for show.

That would be awesome. LA shouldn’t even pretend to be a team. They should just be the Harlem Globtrotters of soccer. Barthez can play the role of Goose. Landon can be the short little bald guy Curly.

Well, it widely known that Barthez is a good friend of Zidane’s and that was why Barthez got the call when fit and not suspended during the World Cup, even though everyone knows Coupet is the better keeper. Maybe they’re doing this to lure Zidane.

Keep Barthez so very far away from the Galaxy please.

Brian, I was going to mention that but decided my post was already long enough. As a France NT fan I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when Fabien retired and Coupet took over.

This has NO chance of being true. (My source was just a French blog, after all.) But in my opinion, if it did, it would be only as a deal-sweetener to get Zidane.
