Now It’s Galaxy vs. China?
By: Laurie | April 5th, 2007This one comes from FIFA, which is FAR more legitimate than most of my sources. (Which tend to consist of a motley assortment of British tabloids, especially where Beckham is concerned.) So we’ll assume this is accurate.
Apparently the China national team is coming to the US from May 31 to June 1. And what will they be doing here? “China will train on American soil from 31 May until 11 June, playing the USA and two Major League Soccer clubs, CFA spokesman Dong Hua said.”
And who would those two MLS teams be? “Local media reported that the MLS clubs would be former England captain David Beckham’s new team Los Angeles Galaxy and Colorado Rapids, but Dong said the opposition had yet to be fixed.”
So…yeah. With Beckham under contract to Real Madrid through June 30… Well, I guess technically we’re “former England captain David Beckham’s new team.” We’d just be playing without him.
But I’m not seeing this happen. Just because we’re getting Beckham doesn’t mean that playing every team in the universe is a good idea. And with all of the extracurriculars already on LA’s schedule this year, we’re already getting a fair amount of exposure. So let’s cheerfully pass on the benefits and publicity of this one to another team. (And let’s try not to think of it as hand-me-downs to the less fortunate step-siblings.)

Good God they should just cancel their MLS season and play nothing but friendlies. It reminds me of the Cosmos back when they had Pele and Beckenbauer. They flew all over the world to play and it hurt their play in NASL.
