Now the Galaxy Are Going After Robbie Fowler?

By: Laurie | June 10th, 2007

fowler.jpgI don’t care if Robbie Fowler is God. I don’t care if he is the fourth leading goalscorer in EPL history. I don’t care if he’s a colorful character who will bring the Galaxy lots of press. He’s still thirty-two years old. (His birthday is a month before Beckham’s.) Is that really what we need this year?

From ClubCall, via The Offside’s own Daryl:

Galaxy wanted to reunite the England international [Beckham] with Solskjaer but the Norweigian wants at least one more season of Premiership football, although Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler may be a more realistic target.
The News of the World quotes an LA Galaxy insider as saying: “Unfortunatley, he [Solskjaer] said no but we believe we have a chance of getting Robbie.
“We want to give David Beckham as much support as possible and he would be an ideal signing.”

Sigh. Why am I getting visions of Alexi hanging out at used car lots, searching for that vintage model which has only been driven by a little old lady to and from church?

If you’re unfamiliar with Robbie and want to do a little research, be sure to check out his Wikipedia entry. (I personally think Wikipedia is the greatest invention since Zinedine Zidane. About whom I have heard precious little lately.) His entry sinclude such glorious little tidbits as:

Fowler’s downturn in fortunes began in 1998, after a knee ligament injury kept him out of action for half the season and caused him to miss a chance to go to the 1998 World Cup. This also coincided with the rise of Michael Owen whose debut came in 1997, Owen firmly established himself in Fowler’s absence.

In 1999, Fowler was fined £60,000 by Liverpool and the FA Premier League for bringing the game into disrepute after he had mimed snorting cocaine off the white line of the penalty area while celebrating his goal against Everton F.C. Defending himself, he said that he was getting back at Everton fans who had insulted him with false accusations of drug abuse. Fowler also received a four match suspension from the the FA for this incident. At the same FA disciplinary hearing, Fowler received a further two match suspension due to a separate incident in which he had taunted Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux over rumours of the other player’s sexuality, by waving his backside at him. The FA imposed a £32,000 fine for the two incidents

So yeah. I’m quite sure Robbie can turn our fortunes around.

I would be shocked if he came to the MLS and even more shocked if it was the Galaxy. The only team I can see him playing for is the Revolution and only for Steve Nicol.

Robbie is a very, very rich man and not because of football, but because of his horse racing stable and real estate. So he doesn’t need the money and let’s face it, he’s not very marketable in the US since he’s not world famous and isn’t exactly the best looking guy on the block, which apparently matters more than actual ability.

If he did come to the MLS, he’d be the most naturally gifted footballer in the league by about a mile after Angel, then Beckham, and then about a mile more better than anyone else. The problem is I don’t see him getting very motivated to play here since there’s very little incentive for him to do so. MLS glory is like winning the Intertoto Cup.

Brian – I guess you’ve never watched Cuauhtemoc Blanco play. Fowler’s one of the best natural finishers in the game, but he can’t touch Blanco for all-around flair.

The good news is that Fowler has matured quite a bit since snorting the penalty line in 1999. The bad news is that those eight years have also slowed him down to a crawl on the pitch (God’s ONLY flaw) although he still managed 7 goals in 10 starts for LFC this season. The excellent news being is that he’s a perfect poacher, as well as a lesson in unshakeable poise on the ball, in traffic, any game, during an earthquake…nice model for a young league and a team that seems a tad nervous in the box.

But, I agree with Brian, seems a long shot, doesn’t need the money, but does love to play. Where he ends up probably depends on where he thinks he’d have most fun doing that…

Okay, you’ve convinced me. I’ll take him!

Laurie, I’m guessing you weren’t watching the epl nearly a decade ago when robbie was absolutely SHRedding the league. past his prime, he’s still way beyond most of the mls. honestly i didn’t think a guy like fowler would ever play over here, even closer to the end of his career. major leage soccer is barely a shadow of the epl and you could only be so lucky to have the legend. and good job cut-and-pasting from wikipedia. seriously?
