Ooh! I Know The Galaxy Secret Announcement!
By: Laurie | March 8th, 2007And the answer to our question of what Friday’s major announcment will be is: Chelsea. As in, a partnership with the English team of same name. And the Galaxy will play a friendly against them on July 21st.
How do I know? Because MLSUnderground (by way of my wonderful and frighteningly well-informed sister-in-blog Martha at the RedBulls Offside) tells me so. And reader Shenn gave me the part about the July 21 game.
MLSUnderground says: “This arrangment will allow the clubs to share resources, arrange friendlies, as well as other opportunities.”
Are you excited? Tell me you’re excited.
So…let’s see… Chelsea. What does this mean? On the bright side, (for me at least) they play several French guys, including the amazing and ageless Claude Makélélé in the midfield, as well as the multi-talented youngster Lassana Diarra. (And yes, this — the number and quality of the French players — is how I judge all European teams. Thanks for asking.) And their striker Didier Drogba is one of the most entertaining players around, bar none. And the German Michael Ballack may not be doing so hot there, but he’s still really pretty to look at. Or…um…so I’m told.
Plus they have the totally batshit crazy (and Russia’s richest billionaire) owner, Roman Abramovich, who’s shown that money is no object when he’s throwing it at obtaining players. (See: Michael Ballack.) And for this, they’ve been accused of ruining the game for other teams internationally.
And they also have the totally batshit brilliant crazy Jose Mourinho as manager, at least for now. So that could make life interesting.
What kind of message is the Galaxy trying to send here, do you think?
