Our Becks Does Champions League

beckham-madrid.jpgSo here’s the question: Is this what Beckham will bring to MLS? Because if so…

Wow. Hold onto your hats.

I just watched the incredible Real Madrid-Bayern Munich Champions League game. 3-2 Real Madrid. Madrid completely dominated the first half, and a lot of that was due to Beckham. Okay, so yeah, maybe the guy can’t beat defenders. But man alive, crosses and free kicks with pinpoint accuracy. That’s all he needs. Real Madrid was ahead 3-1 by the half, and two of those goals were beautifully, perfectly orchestrated by Beckham.

Okay, so yes, part of it may have been that after being shut out of the starting lineup at RM for so long, Beckham really had something to prove today. And he wasn’t much of a factor during the second half. (Seriously, I’m half feeling a need to go do some research to make sure he wasn’t subbed out during one of the long periods where Setanta locked up the screen.) But his contributions to the first half gave me goosebumps. And when you score three in one half? Well, how often do you need more than that?

So David? Whatever it was you brought to this game?

Be sure to pack it up and bring it over here when you come, okay?

  • Hi, Patrick. Thanks for stopping by. I was watching the game on my computer through Setanta broadband. I have the annual subscription because I'm a bit obsessive about the France National Team and it offers good access to France games. (It's tough being obsessive about an obcure -- in the US -- soccer team. Most broadcasters just don't care.)

As an added bonus I get to see some Champions League and other interesting games.

It actually wasn't a blackout -- I got to see pretty much the whole game, although the transmission stalled a few times, once for four minutes. (Not that I was, y'know, keeping track or anything.) I changed the settings around in the second half and that seemed to make things better.

Now I'm searching for easy ways to see the Galaxy games from Seattle.

    Hi Laurie,

Just curious about the black out that you mentioned. Where were you watching the match?

I would contact Setanta about most of the RM team's whereabouts during the second half. Or maybe just the coach. Capello put them all so far back on defense (I may have counted 8-1-1) that I thought I was looking at an American football defensive line for a minute. It definitely put a damper on the fun and is always a lousy plan, lets the other team too close to your goal...where they can score...a second goal for example.
Sorry, I know, you didn't mention RM coaches. Your new Galaxy player: everyone has their highs and lows, but playing for Madrid has made Beckham a better now than he was in what was called his heyday. I know this is not the most popular theory, but since I am an unaffiliated footy fan, my neutrality allows these blanket statements. Anyway, EVERYONE seems to agree on "work-rate" "stamina" and enthusiasm, so the whole thing is more likely to be fun than not.
(p.s. The whole beating defenders thing is in itself a fascinating topic--what isn't?).
  • Beckham is known for his free kicks and corners. His accuracy is the best in the world when it comes to free kicks and crosses.
He led the side perfectly.Madrid needed this victory desperately. this will do lot of confidence in their la liga performances too
