Pete is Gone, and other News Nuggets

By: Laurie | November 26th, 2008

So. Pete Vagenas to Seattle. Wow. I actually thought that after surviving the carnage of Lalas and Yallop and Gullit, he’d retire in LA. Silly me, huh? This certainly does give credence to the rumor that Sigi Schmid is coming to Seattle.

In other roster news: Jeremy Barlow, Joe Franchino and Alvaro Pires have been waived. No big surprises there, alas. Actually, the surprise to me is that more weren’t waived. Good luck wherever the future takes you, boys!

The Galaxy’s complete travel squad for this match is:

Goalkeepers (2): Josh Saunders and Josh Wicks.
Defenders (7): Sean Franklin, Michael Gavin, Leonard Griffin*, Chris Klein, Mike Randolph, Troy Roberts and Julian Valentin
Midfielders (6): Ely Allen, David Beckham, Eddie Lewis, Brandon McDonald, Mike Muñoz and Josh Tudela.
Forward (4): Tristan Bowen, Alan Gordon, Bryan Jordan and Jovan Kirovski.

* – Guest Player

Goalkeeper Steve Cronin will remain in Los Angeles to undergo surgery to remove a plate that was inserted to his right hand in a surgical procedure earlier this year. Cronin originally injured his hand in a game against the New England Revolution on August 30.

In addition to Cronin, Charles Alamo, Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan and Ante Jazic will remain in the area to rest and receive treatment.

So Beckham’s going, Landon’s not. In his case I believe “rest and receive treatment” means “pack for Germany.”

Lot of changes going on, and I’m guessing a lot more to come.

    What happened there?
    Something must have gone wrong or else we put alvaro pires on the protected list just so we can wave him ourselves.

    Yeah I do not get that either I know that we only had three internationals so we had to protect two of them, then we release the one that we protected? I am lost on that decision, maybe we are going to resign him for far less cash, who knows what is going on there.

    They were going to release Pires anyhow. The only reason they protected him was because it was mandatory.

    No it was mandatory to protect 2 out of the 3 so why did they not protect Doming instead, I mean why protect Pires and then waive him 2 hours earlier?

    Pete was a good kid, but a mediocre player. I think the Galaxy have kept him this long more out of respect than necessity and I’m glad Seattle took him off our hands.
