UPDATE: Roster Compliance
By: NathanHJ | March 1st, 2009March 2nd is the day for roster compliance in MLS, in advance of the season opener on March 19 (featuring ex-Galaxy blogger Laurie’s new team, Seattle Sounders FC). Teams must cut their rosters to 24: 20 senior players and 4 developmental ones.
If I were someone with the access and skill of say an Ives Galarcep or Nick Green or Luis Bueno or Andrea Canales, then I’d make a prediction of who stays and who goes based on an in-depth study of progress made during the preseason, how a player stacks up against the salary cap, and gut instinct.
But I’m not. What I’m going to do instead is list those players who I’d be happy if they found work with other clubs. Based on one Pan-Pacific Championship game. Cuz that’s how I roll.
Current Roster (not including trialists like Tony Sanneh):
GK: Donovan Ricketts, Josh Saunders, Josh Wicks
Defenders: A.J. DeLaGarza, Todd Dunivant, Sean Franklin, Omar Gonzalez, Julian Valentin
Midfielders: David Beckham, Leonard Griffin, Chris Klein, Eddie Lewis, Josh Tudela, Kyle Patterson, Stefani Miglioranzi
Forwards: Josh Boateng, Tristan Bowen, Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan, Alan Gordon, Bryan Jordan, Jovan Kirovski, Dema Kovalenko, Mike Magee, Israel Sesay
That’s 25. But there are at least two trialists spending extended time with the club: Sanneh and the Central American defender who’s name escapes me. I’m sure there are others (feel free to add them in the comments).
(Here’s another aside: beyond the fact that the official LA Galaxy roster still lists players who were cut last week, it has bits of lingering weirdness such as listing Dema Kovalenko as a foward, a position I’ve never seen him play in all his years in MLS.)
Okay here’s my cut list:
Keeper: Take all three. If there’s anyone position where it pays to have an excess of caution, this is it. See: USA, Chivas, 2008.
Defenders: If the Central American trialist works out, then I think you have to consider cutting Sanneh. He’s not any faster now than he was two years ago, though his veteran savvy is considerable and he is more maneuverable than Greg Vanney was. If the CA trialist doesn’t work , then you keep him. Take everyone else.
Midfielders: I think there’s a reason Leonard Griffin was out of MLS before Bruce brought him back.
Forwards: I have to say that if Bryan Jordan is progressing well from his injury, then you cut Alan Gordon. I know that Gordon does score 4-5 goals a year and he has a high workrate, but can you imagine him getting substantial playing time on any other MLS team? He’s had five years in MLS to live up to his USL scoring championship and I’m certain that day isn’t coming.
That would get me down to 24, based on the players I listed.
What about ya’ll? Who stays and who goes? Consider this the thread for roster compliance over the next few days.
UPDATE – March 2, 9:02 AM - Charlesj put a roster in the comments that included Yohance Marshall, whom I left off, and the name of the CA player: Osman Chavez.
UPDATE – March 2, 4:24 PM – Several sources, including the Galaxy’s official blog and Nick Green’s 100 Percent Soccer, are reporting that Josh Boateng has been cut. That site also says that the roster has 26 players but some are not under contract so the team is roster and cap compliant. Which I guess means that there will be a couple more cuts to come by opening day.
Also, this story by Grahame Jones in the Los Angeles Times says that David Beckham has been loaned to AC Milan for the rest of the season and will therefore miss at least the first 17 games of the MLS season (and most likely more depending on World Cup qualifying). Hat tip to George and Justin for bringing those to our attention.

If you cut Tony my time as a fan of the Galaxy will be over! You have been warned.

Well… Being that I’m still confused and have basically given up trying to figure out and understand the Becks situation with the LA Galaxy team, here is my prediction for what the team (24: 20S, 4D) will look like…
Goal-Keepers [GK]
Donovan Ricketts [1]
Josh Saunders [12]Defenders [D, D-M, D-F]
Sean Franklin [28]
AJ DeLa Garza [16] – Dev
Omar Gonzalez [4] – Dev/GA
Yohance Marshall [25]
Julian Valentin [24]
Tony Sanneh [22]
Osman Chavez [5]
Todd Dunivant [2]
Leonard Griffin [3]Midfielders [M, M-D, M-F]
Chris Klein [7]
Bryan Jordan [27]
Jovan Kirovski [9]
Mike Magee [18]
Dema Kovalenko [8]
Stefani Miglioranzi [15]
Eddie Lewis [6]
Kyle Patterson [30]Forwards [F, F-M]
Landon Donovan [10]
Edson Buddle [14]
Tristan Bowen [17] – Dev/GA
Alan Gordon [21]
Josh Boateng [33] – DevTo me, these players (basically, young & old) probably will make up the most workable, balanced configuration of speed and experience.

Charles,
You cut Israel Sesay? He’s only, what, 18 and he’s GA so there’s no salary cap hit. I would personally ax Gordon before Sesay just for those reasons. Or maybe Leonard Griffin. And I see you like to live on the edge with your two keeper roster. Relying on the pool GK’s in case of disaster?

I really hate the 24 person roster. Although it does mean that fewer players will make $12,000 a year, so I guess that’s a plus.
Still, it also means that four quality players won’t get to say, “I play professional soccer” and that kind of breaks my heart.

Does anyone know what the rules are for loaning
out players to USL teams. It seems there are a
couple of the guys who aren’t going to contribute
this season and could use the PT. Sesay being one.Posted from

Im with charles on only keeping the 2 keepers but Izzy will make the team no matter what. Also from a article on BigSoccer forum Chavesz is not coming. They want to much $$ and we are not willing to pay it I guess.

Justin, w/r/t Chavez, I think you are seeing the effect of having two players eat up $725,000 of your $2.3 million (or so) salary cap. With a third invested in Beck and Donovan, there isn’t much left over for anyone else, much less expensive defenders. MLS likes its defenders nice and cheap and the Galaxy more so given the salary constraints.
Of course that makes it easy to keep all the defenders currently on the roster and hope something good comes out of that mix.

Off topic, but I thought this was cute:

Justin,
Thanks for that update on Chavez… I thought that the LA Galaxy was actually getting close to sealing a deal with Platense in Honduras. Oh well, I guess paying close to $100K for just bringing the player on loan does not seem like it’s worth it for the Galaxy. On the other hand, I read somewhere else that Claudio Suarez really wants a deal to be made with either of the LA MLS clubs. Suarez is 40 years old. That is just too old to play effectively as a CenterBack in today’s MLS. Sorry, no disrespect to Claudio – but, that’s too risky!
Justin,
Do you think that Bruce and Dave are waiting to see who else gets waived from other MLS clubs today? May be they’re hoping to pick somebody else up much cheaper than $100K and younger with more in the “tank”.
NathanHJ,
If the back-line of the LA Galaxy improves at least by 50% than previous two years, I believe we will do okay with just two GKs. For me, making sure we have enough man-power in Defense and Midfield is going to be the key for making it through the long MLS season. It would be more than spectacular if we still had Joe Cannon, or even better, Kevin Hartman. Right now, it’s all about damage control in the most problematic areas. It takes several years to secure and know a club has a very solid and reliable GK. Once a club does, it would seem very foolish to let that person go – then again, we’re still trying to field entire teams with just $2.6 – 2.8 million.Posted from

LA Times is reporting that AC Milan reached a deal with the Galaxy to keep Beckham on loan til the end of the Italian season.

Well I guess Becks will be back for sure. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-beckham-milan-galaxy3-2009mar03,0,6510100.story Just not in March.
Nick Green also said that Josh Boateng has left the club. This one kind of pisses me off, he is an attacking player that was one of the only guys on our squad that I had seen attack defenders but oh well. Stupid small roster size!

It would be so much better if we could get rid of Beckham now, so we can get some quality players.

And I just read on MLS Daily that if that deal Justin was talking about happens, Beckham will only be available for 11 games. Becks is totally ruining this club!

Hopefully I’m not the only real Galaxy fan that will be booing Beckham when he decides to make an appearance in July. What a crock of ****. We should have made Beckham come back on March 9, then bench him. The Galaxy just got played and we are the laughing stock of… everything. I am so close to walking away from 14 years of being a fan and taking a ride on the Sounders wagon.

The Jones article today says that Beckham doesn’t count against the salary cap or roster cap while on loan, so the Galaxy could sign another player. But how does that work? Does that means that when he returns they have to let that player go? Or is it because they are only paying part of his salary, the remainder goes to the cap?
Posted from

David, I imagine it would be the latter. But the
roster number restrictions are still in place so
to bring someone in, they’d have to let someone go.Posted from

I bet, on the money piece of this deal, that the G’s are going to do some Denilson-like bookkeeping and only apply a portion of his $400K salary cap hit against it because he’s going to play less than half the season. So instead of the full $400K, it’s something around $200K or less.
On the roster size – I bet they are gambling that the vagaries of the season will leave them with a spot come time for him to return. If that doesn’t pan out, they will probably cut someone.
