Galaxy Roster Updates
By: Laurie | March 30th, 2007Remember trialist John Thorrington? Alas, he is gone.
Don’t worry about me. I am starting to get used to this pain in my maternal area. (Thanks to reader Shenn for the news.)
Next year I think I’ll treat trialists like Supplemental Draft picks. Who are, as I’ve said, like chickens: It’s dangerous to name them, because then you start getting all attached, only to see their little heads rolling in the dirt as soon as you turn around. So next year I’ll wait to devote time to them until AFTER they’re on the roster.
On the positive side, though? Alan Gordon is still on the team, so they won’t have to be reshooting those Herbalife photos. He didn’t make the trip to Puerto Rico because he had an undefined “injury.” (And when is an injury good news? When the alternative is yet another little head rolling in the dirt.)
Canadian trialist Kevin Harmse is also still around and was recently called up into the Canadian national team camp. Or at least he was still around two days ago. Two days is a very long time at this point in the preseason.
And the other name still on the trialist list as of two days ago was Ian Russell.
Yallop’s comments on Harmse and Russell? “We still have Harmse and Ian Russell and we’re contemplating what we’re doing with them at the moment,” stated Galaxy coach Frank Yallop. “We’ll know pretty soon.”
Well. That sounds…um…positive. Right?

Laurie have you heard the latest rumor? Some guy on bigsoccer posted that Zidane will join Beckham with the Galaxy! He posted the following link to back his rumor up: http://www.bild.t-online.de/BTO/sport/2007/03/31/zidane-zinedine-vertrag/beckham-david.html
The story is in German but he claims it says that addidas is behind this move. Its wants to continue to promote soccer in the U.S. Zidane would sign a 1 year contract. The rumor is most likely BS but I figured it would make your heart would skip a beat.

^^Two old (and possibly overrated) players in one place. I don’t know what to do…

Howard, you have no idea the autonomic responses you have triggered in my system. If only the money were there under the salary cap. Oh, if only…
I’m leaving for a long weekend tomorrow morning, which means I have several days before I have to read a news report that this has no basis in fact! Thanks for those days.

David, the thought of stellar-yet-aging players reminds me of the country song:
“I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”
It’s all a matter of applying the remaining energy where it counts.

I’d love to see Zidane in the US, but I really doubt it would be with the Galaxy. Salary cap issues alone make it unlikely. If Adidas was smart, they’d try to put him in a short contract with an Eastern MLS team, to try to build up international superstar power in each conference, and Adidas is smart, but this whole report might just be bunk anyway. I’d love to see him play here – he may be a bit past his prime, but he still has a lot of great football in him.

Even if not everyone has had access to Real Madrid on TV for the last 5 years, how can ANYONE HAVE WATCHED THE WORLD CUP AND SAY ZIDANE MAY BE A BIT PAST HIS PRIME!!!!!!!!!???????? (And no Laurie isn’t spending her long weekend at my computer, I am a completely impartial bystander). He can’t go from being breathtaking eight months ago to being old and over-rated now, just as Beckham can’t have been one of La Liga’s Most Valuable Players last season and suddenly useless the next. We must refrain from speaking in tabloidese
