Ruiz is Having Knee Problems. Already
By: Laurie | January 30th, 2008
Okay. So we sign a highly-paid superstar who’s going to fix our scoring issues, and within weeks he’s got injury problems.
Anybody else feeling a nauseating sense of deja vu?
This time it’s Carlos Ruiz. At this moment it’s Guatemala’s issue, not the Galaxy’s, but with training starting next week, that will soon change. According to Billy Witz:
Recently acquired Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz will miss Guatemala’s exhibition match next week against Argentina at the Coliseum due to the lingering effects of off-season knee surgery.
Ruiz underwent arthroscopic surgery in November to remove torn cartilage, and Galaxy team doctor, Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, determined after examining Ruiz on Friday that he was not ready to play. The Galaxy did not release Ruiz for Guatemala’s training camp, which began Monday.
No word on what the specific issue is, but he is expected to play in the Pan-Pacific tournament and the Asia friendlies.
Just like last year Beckham was going to play the entire month of August.
Wait. I didn’t just say that.

“Ruiz underwent arthroscopic surgery in November to remove torn cartilage.”
Okay, so I’m not Ruiz and I’m not in the kind of shape he was in before surgery, but I had the same surgery in November. This is my third knee surgery — and though I’m by no means an expert, I’m not too worried about this news. The Galaxy just don’t want him to aggravate a knee that needs more time to heal from surgery. At least that’s how I see it. He really should be good to go in time for the Pan-Pacific tournament and Asia.

I relieved to hear jenl’s perspective on this. I was beginning to fear that the Galaxy was becoming the side where intl seniors came to die. We’re a football side not a nursing home and it was feeling like the latter more and more.
