Rumor: Freddie Ljungberg (Yes, the Underwear Model) to the Galaxy

By: Laurie | August 9th, 2008

It is possible for one team to have too many players who look good in their underwear? I believe that generally, the answer is an emphatic no. This time, though? I’m not so sure.

The Galaxy may find out. Various British sources, including, apparently the BBC, have linked Swedish international and Calvin Klein undies model Freddie Yumberg Ljungberg to the Galaxy.

So… We’d get what from this, exactly? Ljungberg has an impressive history, including eighty caps for Sweden. He was a solid performer for many years at Arsenal. He can play on either wing, which could theoretically free Landon to play in the middle. Assuming Landon stays.

Lately, though? He didn’t impress me much at Euros, and he was recently let go by West Ham with a reported £4million pay-off. (That’s a lot of money to get somebody to not play soccer, eh?) He’s thirty-one. He has frequent injury issues. And I’m having a hard time imagining that he’d come here for less than a DP salary. (Where, exactly, would we get one of those DP slots?)

So, in short, I’m not sure exactly what we’d get out of this.

Except another guy who looks damn fine in his undies.

That has to count for something. Right?

So I guess it's official the DP rule doesn't apply to LA?
  • Well, that's it, then. I trust Wikipedia with my soul. ;-)

Gibbs is already listed as being on the Galaxy on wikipedia:

I think the MLS rules state "only one underwear model per team". Now if he is a shoe or a glove model, that would be ok. I think people are forgeting the "foot" in "sexy football"

    Say no to banana hammocks!
  • I want him to come to the Sounders. For, um, football reasons. Totally. All footballing reasons.
  • Charles, if you haven't already, be sure to check out my

"What Those Transfer Rumors REALLY Mean"
    post.

    Two examples:

    If an agent says...it means...

-- “MLS is interested” … “His legs are going and he’s got two years, tops.”

-- “I just heard from the LA Galaxy” … “My client is thirty-five and European.”

I was just thinking - when Laurie or Jen would jump on this rumor; you just couldn't resist could'ya? Now, can a team have too many underwear models? So is this what everybody meant by "sexy football"? I'm going to have to say, "Heck, NO! The more bare-chested, tanned, propped, and posed sports players on a team... the more accessories the sports organization sells, the more posters, the more autographed jerseys, balls, etc... and, teh more media attention a sports organization gets". Come on folks, this is Alexi's eagerly-awaiting dream come true. However, quite a few bodies from our current team would have to be traded elsewhere for this to become reality. What I've been noticing is that this past week has been so "eerily" quiet at the Galaxy camp. I don't know - I get the feeling that something must be brewing. Also, please remember, Aug. 15th is the absolute last date for international players (who are contracted/affiliated/tied to foriegn teams) to be registered into MLS. Spet. 15th is the last day for domestic transfers. After that ALL MLS players are locked in until until the end of the 2008 season. Honestly, Laurie - without Carlos, Pete, and Greg getting transferred to other teams... I just don't see how LA Galaxy is going to manage to officially sign and bring in Freddie Ljunberg and Cory Gibbs. Both are very much needed (talent-wise and positional playing-wise) on our team. What do you think... Don't you think that some bodies must move out of the LA Galaxy pretty soon???

I think this is another case of a player using the MLS to get increased interest in himself from other european teams. The player pretends he is talking to the MLS(and throws out insane salaries amounts) which creates a bidding war (ummmm...ronaldinho anyone).

I think this rumour also stems from foreign press not understanding the MLS rules...namely the DP rule. They just think the MLS can just give huge contracts to anyone like all the other european teams and doesn't realize we have salary caps. There is just no way we can get this guy unless we gave away half our team (or landon) for someone's DP slots. And why would the galaxy do this? We don't need aging offense, especially expensive/aging offense.
