Shavar Thomas Joins the Galaxy

By: Laurie | March 27th, 2007

thomas_shavar.jpgSo just a tiny little personal peeve here: Has anybody else noticed that Wikipedia entries for US players almost always list positions as simply “Defender” or “Midfielder” or “Forward”? But for European players the entries almost always list defenders, as an example, as, “Rightback” or “Leftback” or “Centerback”? Why is this, do you think? I believe that I will eventually make it my personal mission to go into Wikipedia and clarify usual positions for all MLS players. Do you think that would be a worthy life accompishment?

But…um…yeah. This post is actually about Shavar Thomas, the Galaxy’s most recent acquisition, who was traded by the Kansas City Wizards to the Galaxy for a “conditional second-round draft pick.” Shavar is twenty-six years old and a “defender,” which in this case seems to mean centerback. He’s also a Jamaican international with 12 caps for the Jamaican National Team, where he often played with new Galaxy teammate Tyrone Marshall.

Best news of all is that all of the KC Wizards fans at BigSoccer expressed universal regret that he was leaving. That’s always a good sign! The best quote: “Shavar for a conditional #2 seems like LA is stealing.”

Hey, it’s not stealing if we’re just taking what’s given!

It took me a few days just sit at the computer without disgust to write up a summary of the deal. It makes practically no sense for us in the short term, especially given that Jimmy Conrad has been figuring into USMNT play so heavily of late. He was always the guy to step in when either Conrad or Nick Garcia couldn’t play. His scouting report pretty much reads as a slightly slower but extremely solid center back who plays well in the air.

…and if we don’t fill in all of our gaps, the 2nd round pick we gave you for Hartman will be higher than the one you gave us for Thomas. Ay!

As far as KC fans bemoaning the move, though, we’ve become weary of pretty much anything to do with moving people in and out, as we haven’t caught any breaks in years… Need I say anything more than “Eddie Johnson”?

    Laurie,

One night I spent hours on the Boca Juniors Wikipedia page adding nationality flags to the retired notable players section. I went wild whenever I found a dual-citizen.

^^^ True story (it was fun and I’d do it again).

Connor, this story makes me smile. I can SO imagine myself doing this same thing, in some France-related way.
