So Where’s Beckham? Or More Importantly, Why Isn’t He Here?
By: Laurie | February 12th, 2007
I’m going to steal shamelessly here from my favorite Galaxy blog (besides, y’know, mine, of course,) Galaxyhopping. Seriously, you need to check out this blog. Christian writes like me, but with a little more of an edge. Because he’s not a mom. So he doesn’t have to worry about a kid coming up behind him, peering over his shoulder and saying, “Oh, so THAT’s how you spell that word!” Although if there were any consistency in my parenting, I would also not blog about things like soccer-induced hangovers or players’ “skillful thighs.” (That last wasn’t my fault — it was a Google mistranslation that struck me funny.) But…um… Yeah, whatever.
Actually, I enjoy Christian’s blog so much that every time I read it I feel incredibly guilty that I have the Offside Galaxy blog and he doesn’t. Not guilty enough to give this one up, of course. Just guilty enough that I think I deserve some Decent Human Being credits for being concerned about this. Kind of like when you walk up to your mother-in-law as the last platter goes onto the Thanksgiving Dinner table (because you’ve been busy watching football) and you say, “Can I help?” Hey, you should get points for that, right?
But I digress. The point of this post is the point of the Galaxyhopping post today, which is: Why the heck are we waiting till August to bring Beckham over? I mean here, finally, we have people talking about soccer for the first time since the seventies, and we’re just going to let that excitement dribble away over the next six months. (Insert astronaut diaper jokes as desired.) At which point, the American attention span being what it is, we’re going to have to start over from scratch again.
I can’t remember seeing a dollar amount attached to a Real Madrid transfer fee that would get him here sooner. Anybody else? But with all the other dollars MLS and Anschutz are investing in Becks, would another few million really matter all that much? Especially when the benefits would go way beyond a few months of playing time.
They have jiggered and rejiggered the MLS schedule so that every single team has a home game with Becks after his expected August arrival. But wouldn’t it have been easier and better to just fork over a little cash and bring him over as soon as he’s done with the Spanish season?
Come on, guys. Opening day’s coming up in a couple of months. Where’s Beckham?
But Christian says it better. So read his blog.
