SuperClasico Tonight!
By: jen | August 29th, 2009
8pm Pacific, ESPN2 (HD baby!) and Deportes. Are you watching? Or will you be there?
Houston owns the Western Conference at this time with 40 points. Chivas is in third place with 33 points, and the Galaxy is in second place with 35 points. Chivas needs points tonight to secure a playoff spot. The Galaxy needs points tonight to pull ahead of Chivas and Seattle (also 33 points) to further cement their playoff spot.
Of all the previews I’ve read, I think Mark Rogondino’s View From the Booth has the best advice for the Galaxy:
It may sound simple, but LA’s ability to generate numerous chances in the offensive third of the field will be the difference in the game Saturday. The key word in that sentence is NUMEROUS. If the Galaxy don’t get into a good tempo, and have movement off the ball, forcing the Chivas defense to track runners and open gaps, it will be a tough night. LA will need to be the aggressor, putting the Chivas USA defense on its heals.

Toledo is your referee tonight, he’ll keep order on things and come down on the hammer HARD. Better hope the Galaxy players realize that and don’t stick their neck out or goad the ref into doing what he does best, giving cards.

Great result, much needed 3 points to put distance on the west. Not much offense generated but Beckham had a great shot on goal, maybe a little bit lucky hitting the post but I’ll take it
What was the deal with the newcomer to Chivas, Padilla. He was all over Dunivant for some reason. I think he deserved a yellow for some of the crap he did! Overall I think the game wasn’t as rough as previous meetings between the Galaxy and Chivas but I still think Chivas are a dirty team.

Congratulations G for the 3 points! Great game by Becks! He really deserved the goal! And he should have got an assist too if not for Donovan missed the chance. But..I think Becks himself should have tried and shot the goal himself instead of passing it to Donovan or other players. Anyway..not a very good game but a very good 3 points!

“What was the deal with the newcomer to Chivas, Padilla. He was all over Dunivant for some reason. I think he deserved a yellow for some of the crap he did! ”
I was wondering that, too, Glen. From what they showed on TV, Padilla seemed to keep shoving Dunivant, but the ref didn’t do anything about it. The second incident he called the foul in Padilla’s favor which made no sense to me. From what I could see, Padilla shoved Dunivant off the field. Anyone who was at the game have a better view of what happened?

I really think the ref was a fan of Padilla’s and let everything go or should I say looked the other way.

I actually don’t think Toledo did a bad job, except the incidents involving Padilla but it got me wondering. Is there a committee or board that critiques the referees? Do they get the equivalent of a yellow card if they do a poor job? Who are they accountable to?
